So my bill will go down?

My monthly internet service should cost less because they are no longer providing usenet, right?

LOL exactly.

BellSouth's cut back on news support as well, and from what I can tell they didn't send a notice on that one either.

Can't say I'm too surprised. The whole business of internet access is pretty crazy right now between legislative policy and ToS changes and battles with Hollywood et al.

Its funny, that people incessantly complain on these forums that ISPs should just provide access to the internet, and not entertainment spinoffs (like youtube, hulu...). As soon as someone's porn newsgroup gets taken away, they start to complain; newsflash: its not too difficult to find porn on the internet without a newsgroup.

If I didn't pay for HSI then they wouldn't give me newsgroup access so it wasn't free - it was included in the price of HSI. I guess that I was paying for it.

Less features for the same price.

It was not free, it is a feature touted as part of the $46 he was paying each month for Internet access, email boxes AND usenet service.

The problem with your thinking is that "internet access" means the world wide web which is what most people today think. When internet access was first marketed to the public, the web was just one of the things you could use on the internet - along with e-mail, usenet, gopher, ftp, etc. E-mail and a usenet server was always provided by the ISP, so no - I don't agree it was a "free" service. Nothing is free. It's just another savings that the ISP won't be passing on to you.

In 4 years, my speeds have increased to 4x what they were - with no additional cost.
4mbps then, 16mbps now - same $52.95. Comcast is teh devil!

2GB of NG? Fuck 2GB!
I've been wondering why they even had it there?

Like it's going to be missed.

In 10 years, my speeds have dropped and then come back again, and the cost is $15/mo more.

Well, instead of raising your rates, they decided to cut Usenet.

Yeah, that was the same argument Comcast used once before when email went down and refused to give service credits because it was a "free" service.

RoadRunner. If it wasn't for Comcast now, I'd be at lower speeds than I was when it first rolled out (10Mbit down). Technically, I still am lower since PowerBoost is only for a short period.

Well look at it this way. If I compare my service now, to the service I had 6 years ago when I signed up for it.... I think my speed has increased about 200%, but my price has remained the same. (I upgraded to Turbo halfway through, but Standard users were 2 Mbit/s in 2002, now they are 6 Mbit/s)

I know they also increased the amount of e-mail accounts you may have, and the amount of space each e-mail account may take on the server. Then they also started adding a free anti-virus program (optional) you can download, and although I don't use it, I know they have added several streaming video options from their portal site and have secured some "exclusive" content or whatever.

None of which has increased the price. Why should taking off 1 service then all over sudden warrant a decrease?

Yes, but my TV service has gone up by over $20/month over the last 4 years. Actually more like $50 when all of my HDTV DVR boxes are added into the mix, but I did finally get a few mediocre looking HD channels added, so only about 40% of those price increases came with little or no extra content. Comcast only keeps the HSI service at the same price because they can easily make up the difference by increasing the largely hidden cost of their TV service. You will only see Comcast post and rave about their internet costs, but good luck trying to get cable tv prices for an area outside of your own. Those numbers are treated like Pentagon secrets.

Newsgroups have nothing to do with TV.
My TV goes up occasionally too - HSI has not.
Screrw that POS 2GB per month access.
Do you think they owe you a discount now?
They don't!
They didn't charge you more when they added it to HSI, they owe you nothing after killing it.

Right?
