dieing anyway

Usenet has been dieing a slow death for a long time. Fewer and fewer people post anything on newsgroups anymore. The downfall started because of web forums and all the velveeta (usenet spam). It is a sad day but not unexpected at all. Even I rarely check out usenet. For what it's worth never even did the binary groups. Only read the text based groups. IMHO if they had kept HTML and the Binary groups away it would still be around but on life support.

Text-based groups are still available via Google Groups. It's different type of interface then a dedicated newsreader program, but the massive archive more then made up for it IMHO.

Yep I have seen that interface and don't like it. Plus last time I checked they don't honor X: no archive .

While Wikipedia isn't a definitive source, according to here they do support X-No-Archive and only show it for 7 days.

This is the sad truth. Back in the day, newsgroups were pretty much your only choice (other than LISTSERVs) for public conversation and debate on the internet. All of that traffic has pretty much moved over to forums like these now. Most ISP customers won't even notice that their gone to tell you the truth.

7 days? Well it shouldn't ever show up on "the web" at all. Which is where google is located. Also they may have changed their stance but I found some of my old post from 2003.

So I presume that you don't use any type of Webmail either? Or transfer files via FTP with your webbrowser? The web is has been much more then just "pure webpages" for a long time with gateways and interfaces into so many other systems.

That would be a true presumtion. Most places you can DL from have ftp or http DLs so go with the http. Either that or fire up wsftp. Webmail is fine for a throw away email addy but other than that doesn't work for me. Most of the webmails now have to have javascript enabled and me no like that. Matter of fact don't even like html in email either. Guess that makes me old huh .
