Palin's Yahoo accounts (gov.palin@yahoo.com and gov.sarah@yahoo.com) were successfully hacked last night and you can see the screengrabs here. Since then, the accounts have been deleted, which could be considered destruction of evidence if a court chose to pursue it.
The evidence, at first glance, looks pretty solid that the accounts were authentic. Photos of Palin's family were pulled from e-mails, plus a "sent" e-mail to aide Amy McCorkell was confirmed by a call to McCorkell herself, reports Wired.

It's not 'destruction of evidence' if the information was simply moved to a new account.
If someone's account had been hacked, would that someone just continue to use it anyway?
Some would, I suppose-- but I'll give Palin a tad more credit than that.

Whether or not that's in fact what she's done, I of course wouldn't know. |

Well, Mother Jones could be facing criminal charges and the hacker could be on his way to the slammer (FBI and Secret Service are investigating). Mother Jones needs to find some ethics and not call her 17 year old daughter to audaciously verify they hacked her email.
Ms. Palin is under Secret Service Protection and Alaska law even has it as a crime. It just shows exactly how stupid these people are to hack a Veep Candidate. Wikileaks could be facing criminal charges as well.

The most telling thing about this episode is that there's not any real "dirt". How many of us could have our private emails revealed to the nation without telling everybody much more about ourselves than we'd be comfortable with.
I assume that everybody involved in high-level politics - Gov. Palin and Senators McCain, Obama, and Biden, all say things in private that would be really damaging if brought to light.

I can't verify it but my understanding is the hacker has been arrested and Wikileaks is now facing criminal charges. The Secret Service and FBI cracked down hard.

The hacker's name is "rubico10" @yahoo.com. My understanding again is he has been arrested. Computer Fraud & Abuse Act and other crimes. The idiot even posted Ms. Palin's 17 year old daughter's phone number and called it. Idiot!

An update:
The hacker got spooked and shut down his computer, deleted everything, and disconnected his Internet. He wanted to download everything and zip file it and put it on rapidshare.com. He tried to get "anonymous" to do it and he informed Ms. Palin's friend after changing her password. He's really upset with "anonymous". LOL!

supergirl, I could be wrong but I tend to disagree with the two things you said:
1. Wikileaks being taken down
It's actually a fairly common thing for it to be down during times like this and yet it always pops right back up when things calm down. It's hosted by PRQ in Sweden which also hosts The Pirate Bay. I could be mistaken but it would take A LOT for it to actually get taken down. (At least more than the FBI whining about it, thats for sure) Just look at how long people have been trying to get TPB taken offline and yet it remains active.
2. It hasn't been confirmed whether the hacker has been arrested or not nor do we know if he was actually smart enough to cover himself. You would think with something like this he would be but who knows. |

Wikileaks site has been closed. Apparently, ICANN has deleted it's DNS. The site is down. However DNS is still working. I am still getting an IP address. The domain registration does not appear to have been cancelled.

Although I have a Yahoo mail account, I download all mail and delete it on the server automatically. I also go to the web interface and erase the spam that is collected. However, I know that some people live out of their webmail accounts and don't want to delete all the mail on the server. It's possible to use a complex password, but then you have to be able to remember and type in that complex password each time. That part isn't so easy, but if you save the login to automate the process, that is another security issue. |
