said by mitchmiami :What is the difference between hacking into an email account and the Watergate bugging: Nothing, Speaking of flawed.
Example 2: Done under the authority or knowledge of the then acting (and somewhat paranoid) President.
Example 1: Someone other than the above.
I don't think that either side is above doing whatever it can to get elected. But it is rather unusual to see a clear trail to the top. |

| reply to avd706 I am more than familiar with the antics of anonymous, I was even watching as this stuff happened. It was done entirely "for the lulz", and posting other peoples email addresses and other disinformation is one of their tactics.
In fact, it's very common for them to impersonate eachother, so it's very likely that the confession was not by the actual "hacker" at all. |

Regardless of it being illegal or not, it is immoral and unethical to access property that does not belong to you, period.

1 edit | reply to SUMware From Ars Technica September 17, 2008 - 07:32PM CT - quote: Hack of Palin e-mail makes case for sticking with .gov account
The break-in comes amid controversy over the Alaska governor's use of the Yahoo e-mail account for state business. Internal documents obtained by reporters allegedly show Palin staffers discussing the possibility of using unofficial channels, such as personal e-mail accounts, as a means of evading subpoenas and requests under the state's open records law targeting her official account.
Though criticism of Palin's use of the Yahoo account had largely focused on worries about transparency, Donald Mitchell, the attorney for an Alaska citizen-watchdog who had been seeking disclosure of the governor's e-mail records, also broached security concerns. "There's a reason the governor should be using her own official e-mail channels, because of security and encryption," Mitchell told The Washington Post, "She's running state business out of Yahoo?"
Though the authenticity of the released material was initially questioned, the McCain-Palin campaign today confirmed what it called a "shocking invasion of the Governor's privacy and a violation of law." The account hacked was not the publicly-known "gov.sarah@yahoo.com" but a second, private address apparently used by close friends and family, "gov.palin@yahoo.com." The public profiles for those accounts have since been deleted, though Yahoo would not confirm whether the same was true of the accounts themselves.
According to a timeline compiled by users at the online chat board 4Chan, an anonymous poster appeared on the "Random" board known as /b/, claiming to have accessed Palin's account. Skeptical posters apparently dismissed the claim as a hoax, until the hacker posted the password ("popcorn"), prompting groups of forum users to log in. One of thesewho appears to be the source of the documents released on Wikileakssubsequently changed the password and notified one of Palin's assistants via e-mail. That user, however, inadvertently included the new password in the released screenshots, prompting a second flood that triggered Yahoo's security lockdown.
The fate of e-mails stored in those accountsas well as the accounts themselvesis now unclear. A source at Yahoo could neither confirm nor deny their deletion, but did tell Ars that any e-mails emptied from an account's trash were not "readily" available to Yahoo. The source also indicated that the company cooperates with legitimate orders for records. In addition to the citizen-watchdog's request, the e-mails are also implicated in an ongoing ethics investigation into whether Palin improperly fired a subordinate, who had resisted pressure to oust an Alaska state trooper then involved in a messy divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister.
The information published to date does not appear to have been especially sensitiveone is a supportive message from a colleague; in another, Palin commiserates with her lieutenant governor about attacks by a political opponent. But if multiple parties had access to the account, it's at least possible that e-mails may have been obtained by intruders. The McCain campaign noted that the matter had been referred to the FBI and Secret Service, and expressed a "hope that anyone in possession of these e-mails will destroy them."
A spokesman for the group Anonymous denied any involvement in or knowledge of the hack. But since Anonymous is an inchoate activist/prankster group coordinated through forums like 4Chan, there doesn't appear to be any clear criteria for who counts as a "member."
If Palin's recourse to the popular Web mail service was an attempt to dodge disclosure requirements, it has clearly backfired. The effect of the incident on the ongoing investigation is uncertain, but it suggests that the use of unofficial accounts for government business is troubling, not just as an obstacle to open-government rules, but on security grounds as well.

| reply to SUMware The fact she had 2 yahoo email accounts should be raising some red flags . Why do you need 2 . Nobody has seen any emails in that other yahoo account which im sure was also deleted .
Bush did the same exact thing when facing subpoenas for his email . They all disappeared . He also refused to cooperate claiming states privilege or some other bull.
The accounts that were subject of abuse of power investigation gets hacked then deleted . She also refuses to let her staff testify saying its politically motivated even though she knows the investigation started in june or july , months before being name VP candidate .

| reply to Steve said by Steve :said by Its a Secret :[By thinking she can get away with using a Yahoo account for official biz. Illegal and stupid. Thank you for telling us that you don't expect to be taken seriously; her actions don't convey any kind of self-styled internet expertise, so this is just partisan nonsense. The most telling thing about this episode is that there's not any real "dirt". How many of us could have our private emails revealed to the nation without telling everybody much more about ourselves than we'd be comfortable with. Yup, yup.
And how many of us are a US state Governor now running for VP?
Give it a break. Anyone believing anything about this or troopergate needs desperately to buy my bridge to nowhere for pennies on the dollar
This is simply too convenient to pass any smell test known to people maintaining a modicum of common sense.

| reply to JPL said by JPL :And you KNOW that she used it to hide official business, right? Has there been ANY such allegation? No there hasn't. If such an allegation comes forward, then fine, investigate. But no one has the right to go trolling through someone else's private e-mail for no reason. If the cops came into your house with no warrant, and no suspicion of any wrong-doing, they'd be violating your rights. This is exactly the same thing. This argument that it's wrong to use private e-mail in that way is an obfuscation, and nothing more. No wrongdoing has been alleged, and as such, no one has the right to go through her e-mail like this. I find the lack of outrage at the act, and the displacement of the argument back at Palin for allegedly doing something wrong when no one has made any such accusation, just horrible. What these perps did is illegal. It's a violation of Alaska state law (punishable by up to 2 years) AND a violation of federal law (up to 5 years). These clowns should be found, prosecuted, and put in jail. Palin's ideology should have NO bearing on this AT ALL. You disagree with her? Fine. But that doesn't in any way make what happened here ok by any stretch of the imagination. The outrage should be the same no matter if it happened to Obama or to Palin. Actually there HAS been allegations and controversy over usage of the accounts to hide certain things from the Freedom of Information Act.
According to laws she and her party support such a suspicion is enough for a no knock warrant and countless invasions of privacy. Perhaps this invasion of her privacy will wake her up to those ridiculous laws. |

| reply to SUMware Wow, people are sure getting their hackles up over politics. Most aren't too bad, but some of them don't read the whole thread before throwing in their two cents worth.
Why multiple accounts? I have 2 Hotmail accounts, 1 Yahoo account and 1 AOL account in addition to my 2 "normal" e-mail accounts (home and work) through my Internet Provider. Why? It gives me more flexability to sign up in forums, control spam somewhat by watching which sign-ups lead to an increase in junk mail, and I can have multiple entries in things that require a "valid" e-mail account for access (like Fox Sports fantasy leagues).
I probably should just cling tighter to my Bible and guns, but just which group talks a lot about "civil liberties" and "free speech" but their candidate's campaign sends out e-mails to the "troops" to try and prevent a radio station (WGN in Chicago) from allowing some legitimate discussion about the candidates previous "experience"? |

Hacking any ones e-mail is illegal but doing it to someone under Secret Service protection is just stupid, with those guys lot of laws kinda go out the window-try sending a threatening e-mail to any of them for a laugh and get back to us on how it went. |

I want to defeat Obama. But I want to do it in the arena of ideas and policy. That's not a concept I saw a lot of, when I ran with Democrats.
If I was the IT guy for a Democrat bigwig, I'd guard their data, viciously; even I found stuff that was circumspect. That's me, living up to my conservative principles.
I never witnessed any such ethics as a liberal.

| reply to mitchmiami said by mitchmiami :The major premise of your posting is fundamentally flawed: How can say it is destruction of evidence if was acquired by hacking (an illegal act). No evidence obtained by illegal means is admissible in court in the USA. The Yahoo account was not deleted by the hacker. It is not known yet who deleted the account, but both the hacked account and the unhacked account were deleted at the same time. This would imply that the account owner deleted both accounts. Currently, the contents of those accounts are the subject of ongoing litigation. If the accounts were deleted by the account owner, that would amount to spoilation of evidence, which is illegal. -- ISCABBS - the oldest and largest BBS on the Internet telnet://bbs.iscabbs.com Professional Geographer Geographic Information Science researcher |
