| reply to SUMware Re: Sarah Palin's Yahoo Account Hacked
Well, Mother Jones could be facing criminal charges and the hacker could be on his way to the slammer (FBI and Secret Service are investigating). Mother Jones needs to find some ethics and not call her 17 year old daughter to audaciously verify they hacked her email.
Ms. Palin is under Secret Service Protection and Alaska law even has it as a crime. It just shows exactly how stupid these people are to hack a Veep Candidate. Wikileaks could be facing criminal charges as well. -- Saving the world keeps me busy. However, I find Earth very primitive from my home planet of Krypton. -Supergirl |

Hacking is illegal. Wikileaks site has been closed. Apparently, ICANN has deleted it's DNS. I can't verify it but my understanding is the hacker has been arrested and Wikileaks is now facing criminal charges. The Secret Service and FBI cracked down hard.
See »michellemalkin.com/2008/09/17/th···hacking/ to see how her accounts were hacked.
The hacker's name is "rubico10" @yahoo.com. My understanding again is he has been arrested. Computer Fraud & Abuse Act and other crimes. The idiot even posted Ms. Palin's 17 year old daughter's phone number and called it. Idiot! -- Saving the world keeps me busy. | supergirl, I could be wrong but I tend to disagree with the two things you said:
1. Wikileaks being taken down
It's actually a fairly common thing for it to be down during times like this and yet it always pops right back up when things calm down. It's hosted by PRQ in Sweden which also hosts The Pirate Bay. I could be mistaken but it would take A LOT for it to actually get taken down. (At least more than the FBI whining about it, thats for sure) Just look at how long people have been trying to get TPB taken offline and yet it remains active.
2. It hasn't been confirmed whether the hacker has been arrested or not nor do we know if he was actually smart enough to cover himself. You would think with something like this he would be but who knows. |

| reply to SGR Although I have a Yahoo mail account, I download all mail and delete it on the server automatically. I also go to the web interface and erase the spam that is collected. However, I know that some people live out of their webmail accounts and don't want to delete all the mail on the server. It's possible to use a complex password, but then you have to be able to remember and type in that complex password each time. That part isn't so easy, but if you save the login to automate the process, that is another security issue. |

The hacker's email addy is rubico10@yahoo.com. I said it was my understanding he's been busted. His fellow hacker turned him in.
See »michellemalkin.com/2008/09/17/th···hacking/ for Rubico10's posts. It is hilarious. Now he is sitting scared in the dark waiting for the Feds or is already been busted.
Yahoo deleted the accounts by the way. They still have them but not available to anyone but Yahoo personnel, and, the Feds---FBI and Secret Service. -- Saving the world keeps me busy. However, I find Earth very primitive from my home planet of Krypton. -Supergirl |

Another completely fabricated statement. What evidence do you have that she has said "I can fire anyone at any time." What evidence do you have that she abused her authority by asking a subordinate to fire a state trooper who tasered a 10 year old nephew?
C'mon, all you guys make claims but cannot back up a SINGLE one of them with FACTS. |

However, I cannot say I feel sorry for them in this instance. They knew that they would be staring down the barrel of a shotgun if they were caught cooperating with cyber criminals in order to "out" a politicians private correspondence. I say good riddance to them.
By the way, please post a source for your claim that the "hacker was arrested." There's far too much speculation and nonfactual information in this thread already. (Not saying you are wrong, but please post sources). |

The thing that is surprising to me is how high-level officials (like VP candidates) are not briefed on security issues such as this, whether it be through campaign people or law-enforcement.
"Debacles" like this could be avoided with very simple steps. All one has to do is encrypt their e-mails via PGP or some such public key cipher.
If anything, this should be a lesson to everyone to practice the use of public key encryption when sending e-mail. |
