anon : The more I think about it the more I'm skeptical about finding anything with the line noise. Although that could be the issue I'm more worried about if I'm going to be able to determine if the line is the issue without tools.

This come from the way the modem work on the phone line. A conventional modem (14.4, 18.8) use the higher frequency bandwidth of the phone line like the voice use. This is easy to troubleshoot because if you can hear it, you know there's something and that's the reason that the line dropped if someone else was calling or opening the line for a call while using it with a conventional modem.

However to be able to have voice and data going through, they needed a way to do that and DSL modem use the lower frequency bandwidth which is inaudible to common human ears.

So I'm wondering if those lower frequencies are disturbed when higher ones are (and I believe not which make difficult to troubleshoot without appropriates tools). Unfortunately for that I'm no physician to confirm.

Still I'll try it, does not lose anything but fear of the "irrelevancy" of results.
