EG : We've seen some recent posts around here of subscribers with D3 modems that are on the Ultra and Extreme speedtiers, and their config file naming conventions still indicate the d11 prefix.

Seems it has been thought for years around here and at other forums that that prefix signified a D1.1 registration/config, but that seems to have been disproven now.

There have also been some discussions on this within the last 6 months, but they seemed somewhat inconclusive.

nanoflower : Well it looks like Comcast is slowly working there way through the Atlanta area doing their upgrades. I'm in the Duluth area and since last week I've had the upgraded signal speeds:

I know about my downstream but they say there's nothing they can do (apartment). It hasn't caused me any issues. I always get my Blast service and my powerboost when I start a download shoots upwards of 2.7MB/sec so I'm not too worried about it really.

dolphins : OK, I have no idea what speed tier I'm on now? I have Performance w/ boost or so I thought?

Most speed tests show I'm getting consistent speeds at 16000kbps down & 7500kbps up with no boost anymore. When I download or upload large files well over 100MB my download speed bursts to sometimes 3mbps and levels off at 1.5mbps sustained and upload is a steady 1.2mbps up on fast servers.

I'm not complaining I'm just confused?

Morac : I'm getting the occasional T3 timeout (every day or so), but it doesn't appear to be interfering with anything.

At this point my modem appears to be swapping back and forth between the D1.1 and D2.0 channel at least once a day. I've started checking on it every now and then and some times it will be on the D1.1 channel and sometimes it will be on the D2.0 channel. It does seem to have a better chance of swapping after a T3 timeout, but one is not required.

It makes me wonder what would happen to someone who upgraded to the D3.0 service.

trent25 : I've also been having this jump between 1.x and 2.0 on the upstream channel since we got upgraded about a month ago. It's actually happening here frequently. I'm not keeping track of it or checking it regularly, but I guess it's occurring every day or every other day at the most.

The way I notice it, when I'm downloading, uploading or streaming the bandwidth monitoring software that I use shows a pause in transfer for a second or 2. I then check my modem and it would be on something other than it was last time I checked. Other than this short pause in transfer, it creates no other issue.

In fact since the upgrade I've been having a lot of T3 timeouts that don't cause any noticable usability issues, and the following 2 errors that would force a reboot of the modem and sometimes it would take the modem a couple of tries before it resyncs:
UCD invalid or channel unusable
DCC aborted unable to communicate on new upstream channel

Before the upgrade I never had the modem reboot by itself. It would go a month or 2 before I reset it myself as I am doing some clean-up. And T3 timeouts occurred less than once a week, now they are a daily occurrence.

Not exactly sure what the upgrade did, but it definitely decreased the reliability of my connection, although the signal levels are still as good as the were before the upgrade.

Here's how things look like right now. Yesterday morning it was on 2.0 and switched to 1.x sometime during the day. Today morning it was 2.0 and now it's 1.x

Cjaiceman : It congestion control at the CMTS telling your modem to change channels. Its doing this because it thinks there is too much traffic on one channel and not enough on the other so it tries to balance the load. I've been told the correct term for this is "modem drift", and is a problem for comcast since they can't get rid of the D1.1 channels because people still have D1.1 only modems on the network.

Cjaiceman : Sounds like it could be one of two things. Here in the Denver market they turned on D2 for everyone, but had such major issues they turned it off and then started upgrading the nodes slowly and knock out any issues as they come up. This doesn't sound like your problem, but it could be.

The other problem it might be is your modem is changing upstream channels due to congestion control. If a channel is too saturated the CMTS can tell some cable modems to change to a different channel, and I suspect this is what is going on. I would check the frequencies of your upstream channel when your speeds drop compared to when you get your D2 speeds. The simple solution when you get bumped to a D1.1 channel is to restart your modem, but this is not guaranteed to work. If it continues you can try calling tech support and see what they can do for you.

I got a recording this past Sunday night from Comcast that they were upgrading their systems. I just returned back home today to find that my Powerboost upload was finally upgraded to those most everyone else in the country had already gotten. The plant in my area had been upgraded to DOCSIS 2.0 sometime this past Monday, per modem logs. The upstream modulation is still QAM16.

FrostyMelon : I don't get the errors, andy, but I get upstream channel switched often - some days on the 'higher' channel...suddenly switched to D1 channel. I am guessing it's traffic, or maybe upgrade issues on their end...or whatever...I actually have no idea as to why. :D

I game quite a bit, so it's noticable when I am switched...I'll try rebooting modem until it hits that channel, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

andyross : Anyone notice that when they are on a 5.12Msym/s upstream, do you get more errors? I tend to get these several times a day on large uploads when I am on this 'faster' channel:

When I'm on a 2.56Msym/s channel, they are very rare.

The upstream signal is also a bit higher on the fast channel for me. 48-49dB vs 46-47.

This is on an SB5120 in an area updated to D3 last fall.

Morac : The reset button just reboots the modem, but doesn't appear to make it "forget" the current settings (i.e., the logs are still there, the "favorite" downstream and upstream are remembered, etc). So basically it just picks the same channels again.

I tried holding down the reset button for about 30 seconds, which looked like it did a hard reset, but it did not.

Morac : Well the modem's event log doesn't really show anything special at the times it switches. There's the occasional T3 timeout every now and then, but not often enough to explain the switching.

BTW I tried restarting the modem and it picked the same channel and it's still 1.x. I'm guessing I'd need to do a hard reset, but I'm not sure how to do that with an ARRIS (or even if it's worth it).

Cjaiceman : Sounds more like your modem is jumping between the two upstream channels. There are 2 upstream channels, 1 for D1.1 and 1 for D2. You should be able to restart your modem and have it get on the D2 channel, but if its changing all the time it sounds like you could have signal issues or a modem issue.

Morac : My area seems to switch back and forth between DOCSIS 1.x and 2.0 every few days. The days it's DOCSIS 2.0 my powerboost upload speeds are near 9 mbps. The days it's 1.1, powerboost only goes up to about 4.5 mbps.

I have no idea why they keep switching back and forth. Currently it's 1.x again. Lately it's been 1.x more often than 2.0.

DToX69 : The upload changes are due to comcast implementing ATDMA modulation instead of the older TDMA so it means an increase in our upstream bandwidth :)
and mine isnt powerboost garbage I hit 1MB/s upload constant it's nice

Cjaiceman : Actually, for us here in CO that speed test is more accurate than DSLreports. Don't use the speedtest in COsprings as they are on Qwest bandwidth, so it has to go to Dallas first, then come back. The speedtest in Denver is on Level3, just outside Comcast's routers.

RR Conductor : We have the Performance Plus Tier (8000/2000) here, and we still only have Powerboost on the download, none on the upload. Blast is not available here yet, nor are any of the newer tiers or DOCSIS 3.0, just the 6000/1000 and 8000/2000, both with Powerboost on the download.

Yep, that is what I have, however, the Ultra claims up to 30 down and 5 up, and the Blast is up to 20 down and 4 up. Based off the speed test results that I see, I guess that Comcast has not set an upper limit at these levels, at least not in all regions.

It seems as though Comcast has lowered the PowerBoost in my region to 20MB down and 10MB up for Blast!® and Ultra. The Performance package(up to 15MB), lists a download and upload boost of 10MB and 5MB, respectively.

Interesting to note is that Comcast no longer shows the upload speeds or download speeds anywhere in the terms or on the price/package area. They only mention the potential download speeds with PowerBoost or the 50Mbps with the Extreme package.

I'm not sure if I like this trend. I want to know my speeds, not just the potential download speeds for the initial 20MB's. I suppose that new customers have to call in and rely on a sales representative to provide this information? Can I rely on them to be truthful and honest? Do they understand the technology enough to be able to explain it, or will they simply regurgitate what is on the marketing pamphlets and online site?

If I didn't know better, from looking at Comcast's site, I'd suspect the 30Mbps Ultra package was a symmetrical 30/30 connection for $62.95/month. It's only because of research and this site that I know it to be 22/5 with PowerBoost for the first 20MB down and 10MB up.

Edit: I found a pop-up window that shows the upload speed to be up to 5Mbps for the Ultra package. Is this a mistake? Shouldn't it be up to 10Mbps?

I'm on the 6/1 performance tier and had speed tests like that since October of last year due to the constant upgrades everywhere around the outskirts of the Chicagoland area (except for the City Of Chicago itself :mad:).
I'm still waiting for that "suppose" date of May 27th which is just over a month away.

Cjaiceman : I was on the internet when it happened. My modem lost upstream sync for about 15 minutes, so I just listened to some music and waited to see if it would come back. Sure enough, about 15 minutes later it re-synced, but it was on a different upstream channel. It had gone to the 2560ksym channel, so I rebooted it and it found the 5120kSym channel. After running a few speedtests and uploaded a few things to youtube I knew I had it. Just check your upstream frequencies, that was the largest give away for me. If I had not restarted my modem I would not have know that I had it, or if I had not been keeping an eye on my upstream frequencies.

I don't know about the other areas, but Denver is not D3. From the rumors I have heard its supposed to be end of Q3 or early to mid Q4, but I am still on D1.1 here and some are on 64QAM 5120kSym. Hopefully mine will be upgraded very shortly, like other users pretty close to me, and then we will be on D2, but not D3 for at least a while.

The only reason they might be doing that in Denver is because they are rolling D2 and D3 so close to each other that it really doesn't make sense to go 6.4MHz 16QAM, then turn around and have to roll 6.4MHz 64QAM, then roll D3. All I know is the extra bandwidth is very welcome, and I will take more if offered.... *cough* 100mbps *cough*

It depends on which market you are talking about. There are plenty of markets who have deployed 6.4MHz 64QAM channels (Minnesota, Beaverton, Seattle, Boston, Denver are all ones that come to mind.) Plant health is obviously paramount when you are deploying 64QAM so most systems are doing it surgically.

Some of us are hitting 10-11mbps during PowerBoost.
Also, you might try a different test site - not that speed tests are to really be trusted, but other sites may give differing results.

anon : comcast did some upgrades in NJ so things run more efficiently.. also increase the bandwidth on return qams from 3mhz to 6mhz bigger pipe hence the faster speeds. Also D3 modems are backwards compatibly, it will list the 3 qams available but only is actually connected to 1.. many areas have 3 downstream QAMs but they are not bonded they just hop based on traffic.

elbrute : I'm subscribed to 6/1 speeds, and had'nt seen any power boost.
(they said it was because of my old modem - befcmu10v2)
Today I noticed some changes. Got a BIG increase in
download speed, and a few changes on the modem stats page.
A different upstream frequency and a Max Bit Rate of NO LIMIT!

Think they are testing here for faster speeds/D3 stuff?

DarkLogix : when the time comes that D3 modems are at a price thats reasonable and easy to get then I think everyone should upgrade their modem even if they're only on the 12/2 plan

why your ask (super PB for one) and 2 D2 will be old tech

but at this point in time the cost of a d3 modem is to high to justify and theres not yet a guarantee that CC will provision it

D3 modems may be the only ones issued in the future being that they are backwards compatible.

I called Comcast again and finally got someone who had been trained. I am receiving almost the maximum available on the Comcast 2.0 modem. In order to get the advertised speeds, they are sending me the new Comcast 3.0 modem.

BTW: Blast is Comcasts 16/2 speed tier and Powerboost is Comcasts way of giving you a "burst" of speed for a short bit then it lowers back to your advertised speeds.

No joy there either.

Is there anything that I should be doing on my end?? Any modem configuration files that I should have that I don't??

What else can I do -- other than continue to call Comcast and speak with untrained personnel??

Also, what is Blast and what is PowerBoost?? How can I tell if either one of these is installed??

I guess I get what I pay for here, 16/2 Blast. Oddly enough I get faster results from Denver (400 Miles) than their Salt Lake test server at XMission (10 - 15 Miles). But that's routing for ya. :)

Perhaps I should call and see if the 22 meg tier is here...? That's probably asking too much from Comcast considering they just implemented 16/2 here in the Salt Lake area.

Yes, but the big 3 CMTS vendors that Comcast uses do not support US channel bonding yet. It's on the roadmap for this year. I wouldn't expect it to roll out until 2010 though.

I meant after all at some point the D2 tiers might be pointless and the bandwidth can be better allocated with d3 modems

(D2=packing a channel D3= spreading the data over 2+ channels even if they aren't using even 25% of that bandwidth)

so there will come a time when D2 modems will be looked at as old and obsolete and D3 will be the standard

The legacy channels will have to remain for quite some time. The last time I looked we had a large percentage of D1.x modems still on the network (in the area of 40%). I know certain markets evaluated swap-out programs but ultimately it was dropped due to cost.

We've already taken all 1.1 modems off of our approved modem list here in Colorado. I imagine that they will shut off the legacy channel and offer modem upgrades once D3 has arrived. Technical support is already telling people that have 1.1 modems that their modem is not on our approved modem list and that if they have any issues with it, they will have to purchase a new 2.0-compliant modem or lease a 2.0-compliant modem from us.

Sorry if I was not clear but I was referring to two separate channels running in tandem. One being D1.1 and the other being a D2.0

The modems are backwards compatible and do not need both channels available and running simultaneously in order to function.

An actual modem, or a CDV eMTA/HSI modem(ARRIS maybe)?

My ARRIS eMTA was fast for a short period and was displaying DOCSIS2.0(see page 2 of this thread).
Since then, the ARRIS is no longer displaying DOCSIS 2.0, but rather DOCSIS 1x.
Speeds on the ARRIS have dropped back to ~3.5mbps upload during PowerBoost.

My Motorola SB5100 doesn't display DOCSIS configuration but hits 10-11mbps upload during PowerBoost regularly.
I'll be sticking with the Moto for the foreseeable future. ;)

My connection went down for a few hours this morning and when it came back my IP had changed from a 76.xxx to a 24.xxx and a speed test shows faster uploads, was running 25-30 down and around 3 up, now I'm getting 30/5.

I'm on the 6/1 plan.

You can look at the symbol rate to see what the channel width is.

5120 Msym/s = 6.4MHz

And if you see that then you know you are registered in DOCSIS 2.0 PHY mode on the CMTS since that channel width isn't supported in DOCSIS 1.x

netcool : It's not strange. From your screenshot you are on a DOCSIS 2.0 ATDMA 16QAM 6.4MHz channel. Which provides roughly double the capacity that a DOCSIS 1.1 TDMA 16QAM 3.2MHz channel would provide.

I think there is still work going on in my area, as I've had at least three different IP's, short IP lease times, and fluctuating signals (although not out of range) in the past three weeks....also the local paper quoted a Comcast VP saying that "all of eastern massachusetts will have Docsis 3.0 by Q1 2009"...so I assume changes are ongoing.

anon : There is no speed advantage with it. More error correction is needed for SCDMA so you end up with the same speeds as 64QAM.

The advantage to MSOs is that they can use space that would otherwise be unusable because of noise concerns.

Included modem log too....was docsis 1.x before, am now showing docsis 2.0 on the upstream. Weird thing is, shouldn't I have been moved from QAM16 to QAM64?

Edit: After looking at the information on the site linked to above, it appears that if your modem's symbol rate is 5120 than you are using DOCSIS 2.0. My modem does not specifically show the DOCSIS version, so this could be helpful.

Edit²: It seems that the DOCSIS 2.0 table for QAM64 and symbol rate 5120 is incorrect on that link. I think it should be 30.72 Mbits.

Mine has hit 11mbps Upload during PowerBoost.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 16228 kbps (2028.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 11012 kbps (1376.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 10 ms

Wireless, so download tops out in the 16.5 to 17.5 range.

Chaldo : I am subscribed to the 6/1 and when i take speed tests my upload usually reaches around 1.5 but i reset my modem and now im getting 2.5-3.5 upload so I'm wondering whats going on I think its the same thing you are experiencing.

Cjaiceman : So, I feel slightly foolish right now. To explain, I have a PFsense firewall/router computer that has traffic shaping turned on. After reviewing my setting tonight while changing something else I found out that they were set to my old powerboost settings. After readjusting them I found some more speed! :D

According to my neighbors Arris eMTA modem we have 64QAM upload, but I'm seeing the speeds that the 64QAM areas are. Maybe my node just doesn't have that kind of upstream. Its a small neighborhood, but we are kinda secluded so I know we are on our own node.

Sorry, am on 8/2 tier. Surfboard 5100 Modem. I probably shouldn't have rebooted the modem. :)

Funny, about 2 weeks ago I was getting up to 4MB uploads for about a month.

I'm in the Bay Area... and I just got a new modem from them.

I just exchanged my old Terayon modem at my comcast center nearby, and picked up a Motorola SurfBoard SB5101 modem. Once I called Comcast and had them re-provision (i think it's called) the modem, I got off the phone, powercycled it, and then logged on to the modem's configuration page, and reset the modem to defaults.

After I rebooted the modem from the configuration page, I powercycled it by manually unplugging it, and the speeds nearly doubled.

I am on the 6/1 Performance package, and I did notice that the Downstream Channel ID has changed.

For me, it's like driving to a cousin's house 100 miles away and the first 20 miles I can do 200MPH then drop back to 65 for the remaining 80 miles.
Makes that trip go by way faster than if I had to do 65 from start to finish.

Probably not for awhile. Plant health isn't the best there. I think they might go to a wider channel before changing the modulation profile.

The was what I was trying to get across with my post. At exactly 2 minutes, a wildly fluctuating upload speed (between 2.2Mbps-4+Mbps) drops to a rock solid stable 2.0Mbps on my DU Meter stopwatch for the rest of the upload, which I've continued to test for another 2-3 minutes. So perhaps it's just a matter of me taking 2 minutes to download a certain amount of data, but it seems odd that with the PowerBoost variances during an initial upload, that each time the same amount of data was transferred precisely when 2 minutes expired.

I just used whatever DU Meter was set at, so perhaps the stopwatch tool is using the wrong value.

Edit: Never mind, I had stopped the test and DU Meter used "kbps" as a default value when nothing was transferring. I just took a quick look at the DU Meter stopwatch to be sure I was entering the correct value, which was no longer being displayed since the file was no longer being uploaded. Silly me. It should be "Mbps".

jmn1207 : Interesting to note that for the first 120 seconds of my 64MB upload, using the DU Meter stopwatch, I noticed a current upload speed that fluctuated between 2-5kbps. It was mostly hovering at 2.5-2.7kbps with some spikes to 3kbps or more. Exactly at the 2 minute mark from the start of the upload the meter read a constant 2.0kbps for the duration of the file upload.

It seems evident to me that the PowerBoost in my region is regulated by time, at least when there is very little traffic.

This is driving me nuts. I got a ton of stuff going on right now. In a Skype call, playing a couple of games on Full Tilt Poker, and yet my speeds are better than ever. I'm about to do a couple of large file uploads and downloads to see if anything has changed recently or if this is just a test anomaly. This would be the first time that this speed test gave me such a huge increase in performance. I test daily, several times.

SCAVENGER1 : well today i decided to use the dlink dcm-202 modem i just got to replace the linksys i have. and now my net speeds are all at stock speeds. no more speed boost, man this sucks.

and i am still on the phone with them. and i have been on hold for over a 1/2hr so far. and now this last tech says there no problem with it. and that they do not provide any speeds that go past 16m down.

well i had him put my linksys modem back on for use. i then got this speed test. talk about night and day

now what is up with the 2 modem i have. since the dlink is rated for faster threwput then the linksys.

dadkins : Wireless "g" will usually run at 17mbps *for me*.
LAN via wireless "g" will usually run at 22mbps.

Wired can hit 35mbps.
Wireless "g" will never achieve this speed... "n" might.

Your wired and wireless should be nearly the same as the wireless speed is almost always considerably larger than the internet download pipe.... I would use Dr. TCP to tweak your wireless pc RWIN (I use abotu 200000 for my wireless pc's) and get those numbers up to your wired range.....

Keep in mind the tests should be done in rapid succession due to the constantly varying server load/network conditions.

SCAVENGER1 : well i guess i should have come back here for info on whats been going on with my net. since i have had so much net problem i was going stir crazy!

and comcast phone support being worthless and rude at times with me. trying to say it was my router and other BS!! i to had that same problem were i had to power cycle my modem to get the net to get back online all most 3 + times a day.

i end up sending my Linksys BEFCMU10 to Linksys for a RMA. since the tech that has been to my house like 3 times with in 2wks time period and without finding anything wrong.

but it seem after i got my RMA modem back it was fine till last Sunday night. and that Sunday night i called about that my net was down and a power cycle was not helping. but the automated phone said that there was a outage in my area, im in Freeport,Illinois.

and was supposed to be back up tonight at 6:30pm and when i called it was after 9pm :| so i did the call back when it was fixed. i did not get the call till Monday and when i plug my modem back in it was ok.

till later that day.it was like some one was unhooking my cable and then reconnect it. threw out the hole wk this was going on. so after talking to phone tech support(big joke) i had a time for a tech to come out this Friday, which is today.

he told me that they just got done with a huge improvement and with my area is now on a new channel .and right before he showed up. i ran a speed test and i notice my upload speeds were all most double. i went from 1.5mb to all most a 3mb

all so i notice that my modem became stable after Wednesday of not having any net at all. i was down for a hole day. and since reading this thread i went and check my modems setting. and i now see that my frequency has changed to.

AVonGauss : I don't have any "inside information", but I do believe they are getting a bit more active in my area based on posts about channel changes and variations in results over the last couple of weeks. The only published information I've read dates back to March 2008 and states DocSIS 3 won't be deployed until 2009 in this area, but I am selfishly hoping that might have changed... ;)

Unfortunately, at least for me, I never experienced the dramatic upload speed changes described in this thread. The 4300 was pretty consistent and I believe in line with what others on the 8/2 were experiencing with PowerBoost.

AVonGauss : True, and it's not really the topic of this thread, but he's right, something has changed over the last couple of days. If it was just a case of more subscribers being added or using their upload more, you would have expected to see a gradual decline. In this case, over the weekend I was seeing uploads measured on average around 4300 on the 8/2 tier, for the last two days it averages around 1850.

I try to be a glass half full kind of guy, so I am hoping they upgraded the CMTS to support DS 3 and just haven't tweaked it yet - in reality, I have no clue what the change was but from the other posts it does not seem localized to a given node.

Trivia fact: Did you know you can type any third level domain name you want for SpeedTest?

anon : Powerboost depends on if there's any extra bandwidth to be shared on your node, if there's not alot to be shared..then you won't get alot..

I was looking on Speedtest.net at my previous tests, and you can clearly see on the night of 10/28 that an earlier test shows 4000 level and a few hours later, its down to 2300 level where it has stayed since.

Had comcast tech here today and said nothing could be found, and I should suspect my modem's firmware, altho it has been fine for the 18+ months I have owned it, and my download speeds are still up to snuff....

I just tested the speed on the wired laptop (hardwired thru router) and it only gave around 5meg upload..so not much difference between this computer (wireless) and the wired one.

No use resetting it..until comcast deploys the new speeds here..

Edit: Nevermind..I saw that you have QAM64..im on QAM16..which is probably why your getting higher powerboost.

I think speedtest.net servers are just slow..did a speed test to chicago on comcast site and got this:

trent25 : K3, mine never went to DOCSIS 2.0 on the "Status" page that you're showing, it's always been the same as you have it now and using QAM16 (even after powerboost up to 3mbps started to finally work). Although on the second page the "HW/FW Versions" on the first line ("System") went from DOCSIS 1.1 to 2.0 earlier this month, but that happened before I got the powerboost on upload.

So, for me, there was nothing different between before and after powerboost started to work for uploads.

Maybe the fluctuations in the upstream power is due to some work being done in your area?!?

K3 : I did try some other tests, downloads are around 14Mb/s but my uploads stay between 1.4Mb/s and 1.9Mb/s :( I did some testing on torrents and Im able to download at full speed 3.5MB/s with powerboost 1.9MB/s after powerboost. The upload wont go above 250KB/s though, no powerboost at all.

Im waiting for this upstream to go back to Docsis 2.0 then I will test again to see if I get the higher upload speeds I have been seeing for the past week.

K3 : Today my upload speeds are back to what they were before. I noticed on the arris page my upstream is now at Docsis 1.1 instead of Docsis 2.0 like it was yesterday. It seems whenever it does this I experience much slower upload speeds. My download speeds are much worse than before too, but only on this site, Pings are through the roof also.

K3, I see. I'll keep an eye out for the insane upload powerboost speeds if we ever get them here.
I'm in an apartment building. Between me and the tap there's probably around 50feet (distance to fire escape stairs where the cable box is), and my cable on the tap is a regular coax, the type that you'd see used for in home runs. But I don't think it would matter much for such a short run.
Drops haven't been changed during the time I lived here (I moved here ~4 years ago) and 2 cable providers ago (Urban Cable Works and then Time Warner). So drops might be quite ancient :p

K3 : It will work with the Arris Emta if they have upgraded your area. Another thing the tech did when he replaced my modem was replace my aerial drop. The original drop was from the cablevision days, I would say 1998 was when they put the line in originally. They replaced it with this supercable, lol. It is, I would say 3 times thicker than the coax going into my modem. I have never seen a cable like this so maybe this is another reason for my faster speeds.

After reading your post I tested my TM502G @ speakeasy, same result as before 2.2mbps no powerboost. (My real life speeds are actually below 2mbps).

But since I had noticed earlier this month that the modem's HW/FW page went from DOCSIS 1.1 to 2.0 for the reported system but the modulation remained QAM16 (TDMA) for the upstream, I decided to reset the modem again to check if it would change my modulation ... no change.

BUT when I tested again @ speakeasy 3.3mbps ... Wooohooo :D

Not trusting speed tests and their inconsistent results, I tried an upload to my online drive (XDrive), and sure enough powerboost phase between 3-3.3mbps and at the end leveled of to a nice stable 2mbps (attached graphic). In the past I used to only get 1.8mbps with XDrive and no powerboost.

I wonder if I would be seeing the 6mbps upload boosts others are seeing if I had something other than the Arris Emta!

dadkins : I have the TM502G, only one phone rep was kind enough to tell me that it was problematic with Blast, and she was amazed that 8mbps worked on it.

K3 : Finally some success, called Comcast again, talked to a really nice lady who said our Arris402P is the reason we are having problems with our speed. She continued to say that particular modem is for the slower comcast tiers and she is sending out a tech tomorrow with an ArrisTM602G. I hope that fixes our problem with us not getting powerboost.

I don't think he is full it, there is no need for a seperate modem for phone and internet. I must state that I do however have 2 modems, the only reason is because when I upgraded to 8mpbs, they said that CDV modem would not handle the 8mbps.

I was in an apartment at Broadlands in Ashburn. Moved into a house in Reston. Only a 15 mile move, but it was from a very new area to a more established neighborhood. Yep. It is already implemented in the area/s where the 50/5 service is available with which they have supplied the downstream only channel bonding modems such as the Moto SB6101.

Yeah, sure. But I believe they are doing D3 behind the scenes and where D3 isn't publically deployed (IE 50/5 tier), they're cranking everyone up to D2 levels which D3 spec is capable of backward compatiblity.

How else do you explain Dadkins being at D2 when 99% of Comcast is Docsis 1.1?

Ooh, sounds like you should get you a net only modem then. Dadkins and I kept our Motorola Surfboard 5100s for internet and used the Arris EMTAs for phone only.

Works just great and we get insane PBs

D3.0 for the time being is all about downstream channel bonding. So to offer next gen speed packages they need to increase Upstream bandwidth as well and without upstream channel bonding (which is coming next year, maybe.) they have to at least upgrade the modulation profiles.

dadkins : S.F. Bay Area - FiOS is a no-show.
Meanest thing other than Comcast is(as stated by Chris) is AT&T DSL 2 a possible 6mbps.
But, seeing as the SBC(now AT&T) lines here sucked, 3mbps would peobably be the best available at this address.

The 8mbps Comcast service I had blew AT&T out of the water.
Comcast threw Blast at me and it stuck! ;)

As for D2, that is what the ARRIS eMTA shows as being connected.
My upload PowerBoost went from 3.5 to 7mbps(still levels off at 2.2 after PB).

D3 would be nice, but that would mean a new modem. :huh:

Nope! He's in an AT&T area where only up to 6 meg DSL is available to him. Not even U-Verse yet...Not that he'd want either. ;)

Comcast just wants to future proof and have a bit of fudge room, so they hit him with Blast! and now it looks like they're about to do something else.

22/5 on the D2 spec is completely doable and I'd think with AT&T's 18/1.5 announcement, that's what they're gonna do.

Screw having to get D3 hardware for it...

jmn1207 : Hate to dig up an old post, but at least I searched before I posted. :)

Rob suggested that this testing would be done by Sept. 30th, but in the last couple of days my upload performance appears to have been increased. We are in a FiOS zone, so hopefully DOCSIS 3.0 testing is being done in the Northern Virginia area.

Here is a full 64MB upload showing fairly decent performance, and with a bit more "speed" than I have ever been able to accomplish before using the same file and test site.

These performance tests were done just before 9:00 PM local time.

Edit: Forgot to mention that my modem bootfile is still the same, d11_m_sb5120_speedtierextreme2_c01.cm.

Channel IDs say what port of the CMTS you are on in coordination with the MAC Domain.

At least, in the Motorola BSR and the Cisco UBR10k that I have worked with in the past 4 years.

With a channel ID of 11, that means there is at least 12 upstream ports in that MAC domain, which is a huge ratio (I try to go 1:3 or 1:4....1:12 is pretty much oversubscribed IN DOCSIS 1.x

With a channel ID of 11.....does sound like D3.0, as you can make the MAC domains a lot bigger because of the increased downstreams.

This is mine, but I am NOT on Comcast, but I know for a fact I am on upstream port #5 of the CMTS.

Just ran a test...still 2.5mbps

my download is about the same as yours.

Rob : Some markets are undergoing tests in preparation for doc 3.0 testing. These markets might see an increase in speeds while the tests are being performed. The tests should be done by Sept 30, 2008.
