<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1013851"><b>Old_Grouch</b></A> : Two things will get dsl or any other broadband technology to the rural areas or to areas where it doesn't exist even if that is a suburb of a big hamlet (my humble opinion)<br><br>1 - the local provider of service sees a way to make more money from providing the service than it costs.  Whether it is technology extension or technology replacement.<br><br>Sometimes it is a pure cost : revenue game and sometimes the plan to replace old facilities might be upgraded if there is some un- or under-served demand.<br><br>2 - the government decides it is worth some sort of redistribution of wealth.  No, that wasn't a slap at some presidential candidate...it already exists.  Rural electfication was the government's way of saying all the folks out yonder should have lights if they flip the switch and, behold, there was a way to extend electricity without waiting for profitability.<br><br>Same folks (clue - - U.S. Department of Agriculture) have a scheme that lets companies or units of government or _______ apply for federal dollars to support the cost. <br><br>Tons of more information if you tug on <A HREF="http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/!ut/p/_s.7_0_A/7_0_1OB?navid=UTILITY_SERVICES&parentnav=RURAL_COMMUNITY&navtype=RT"><u>This String</u></a> and start reading.<br><br>Guberment makes the dollars available and you have to convince the local folks to go fer it.<br><small>--<br>At <b><A HREF="/forum/disco">Team Discovery</a></b> we know how to get more outta that danged 'puter of yours!</small>]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1532295"><b>moven</b></A> : I live less than 10 miles from town,(huntsville tx) several home around me have DSL, but ATT gives teh same old response your to far and we are not tell you when..IE WE REALLY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. So no I see them in now hurry to provide, they would rather wire the 3rd world first. However, last month the ATT computer told me I was now eligable, but yesterday they emailed me saying so sorry still out of luck.<br>So still waiting. ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/1498529"><b>slipknot0129</b></A> : there is already wireless internet for rural people in oklahoma but that makes me think if att could make their dsl lines go out longer. on wireless internet there is a 40 mile radius people can get it from. is there going to be any technology that makes the dsl lines alot longer for getting to rural people? i heard the signal shuts of at about 2 miles but im wondering if they could make technology that extends that to 100 miles? dsl has been out for along time, i thought they would have already fixed that by now to get to rural people.]]></description>
