This section tells how to use a Symantec tool to gather logs and system settings and then send them to Symantec Technical Support. This data is needed to help find a solution for this problem

This tool is specific to Norton AntiVirus 2009 OEM,Norton AntiVirus 2009 Online,Norton AntiVirus 2009 Retail,Norton Internet Security 2009 OEM,Norton Internet Security 2009 Online,Norton Internet Security 2009 Retail

Your input using this system will advance the solution to this issue and I highly recommend your details be submitted to them.

Would running the cited tool help now that the problem appears to be rectified?

Also note, my network icon returned to the task bar on 3rd boot.

Spybot Search and Destroy, latest version and definitions, did report that Windows Security was disabled in the registry. I had Spybot repair the registry entry.

Next up, Ad Aware.

Sigh, I guess using the Norton on-line help can't be avoided. On my 3rd boot, I get the above error message. The Norton Internet Security 2009 error message is now 3040, 10062.

I'm currently chatting with Murugash at Norton using the Norton Internet Security 2009 support chat feature.

I got the following request - "I can connect to your computer and remotely work to resolve this issue. I can perform the steps required on your computer from here, while you can sit back and watch.

This is a secure connection, and I will not access any personal information stored on your computer. If you are concerned at any point of time, you can disconnect the session by clicking on the "End" button. I would encourage you to view the troubleshooting from your end.

If for any reason you need to be away from your computer, you can inform me via the chat window and we can disconnect the session and resume once you are back.

Shall we continue with the remote connection to your computer?"

I can tell you that I used the new remote diagnostics just 2 days ago and it was well worth it. My problem was with a renewal date problem and they fixed it while I sat back and watched them do all the work.

Go for it !!!

It appears the Norton tech installed a remote desktop manager from norton.com called rescue me or some such. He remotely ran and watched my desktop.

He seemed to uninstall, reboot and re-install Norton Internet Security 2009.

I am not a fan however of having remote desktop controls available on my PC. Is there a way to remove "rescue me" from my PC?

Follow up, anyone who knows how to uninstall the Symantec remote connection wizard, I'd appreciate your help.

There should be a something called LogMeInRescue. That is what they use and it is only a one-time thing, it can't and doesn't reactivate.
