anon : The Linksys routers can have custom firmware on them. polarcloud.com has one of the best called tomato. A good feature is turning up the wireless radio so you get better reception. I went from 60% on my PS3 to 85% which makes online gaming much better and my laptop speeds seem like there wired connections!!! I've used my Linksys router on Shaw and Telus with Windows Vista and XP operating systems.

Reset the wrt54g by holding the reset button in the back for 10 seconds.

This problem could be a few things. Patch cord being the most obvious and easiest thing to check

The other may be the auto setting for your network card config. you may have to set your network card to auto detect line speed or if it already is try 10meg - full or half duplex.
