Three things

A) last time I checked my electric company doesn't cap my useage.

B) My electric company doesn't charge 10X the cost of the product.

C) The more electricity I use, the LESS per kilowatt I pay, not MORE.

Maybe Mr Britt should check his analogies before he uses them for examples.

Re: Three things

Amen to that. Electricity around here, above the monthly fee, is a scant few cents per KWh, with volume discounts as you use more. They give out pamphlets in the mail about convervation, but if you use a lot of electricity they don't mind...you just pay more. And it's not that much either...I'm in an apartment with three roommates and the power bill is around what I pay for internet.

Good for you. Here in SoCal, we pay a fortune for electricity. There's a reasonably priced baseline, but once you go over that, you start getting charged significantly more. 300% over baseline and you're getting raped. Baseline, BTW, probably barely covers running a refrigerator.

Volume discount? HA! I wish.

The power bill is around 4-8 times what I pay for internet, and I'm on a $55 internet plan!

Re: Three things

How many cents per KWh average? Keep in mind that some folks want to charge $1+ per GB of bandwidth...I don't think your electricity is THAT expensive per KWh. Though I feel for you; power is really cheap here, less so back home.

So you're supporting the notion that an ISPs cost structure involves a lot more than just the wholesale rate they pay for moving bits? Good, I knew people would start to understand. Now someone explain it to Karl so he can start doing basic math?

Re: Three things

Oh no, looks like I'm going to regress here...

IF ISPS HAVE A COST STRUCTURE, PASS THAT COST STRUCTURE DIRECTLY ON TO CUSTOMERS INSTEAD OF HIDING BEHIND SHODDY PRACTICES LIKE CAPS AND THROTTLING!

Yes, there are fixed costs. Pass 'em. Variable costs? Pass 'em. But don't cut me off because you don't feel like passing the variable costs on to me, or overcharge me because you're going to pocket the difference if I'm gram'ma Jane checking her e-mail once a day and thus using a gig or two of internet service per month. Blagh.

Perhaps you could convince the cable industry to be a little more transparent in their costs. Then you won't have to fight to make your point to Karl, because there won't be one for you to make...

YAWN...

You missed the biggest one:

D) If you feed the electric company more kilowatts than you use, they pay you!

So, if they don't want the electric company model, and the North American landline phone model doesn't use metering, how about the long distance phone model?

If a cap goes on, then I want detailed monthly billing, like the long distance company. That way, I can easily discover and block the ad-bot sites that chew up the bandwidth.

Isn't it still the case that it costs more to meter and bill long distance calling than it does to actually provide it? Isn't that why they don't meter local service?
