| They will lose me as a client.... I don't download THAT much, I average about 100 Gb a month. Most of it is game server related traffic, as I run 5 OpenTTD servers (Open Source Transport Simu game) on one box, and with map-downloading it uses a lot of data, i'd say 30 Gb a month.
I can live with a Comcast-like cap of 250 Gb. But anything less then 100 Gb, and i'll switch my TV to DirectTV (more HD channels anyways) and my ISP to DSLExtreme. -- Obama 2008 - Because McCain is more of the same! |

Most people don't use anywhere near that. Second running a game server is 100% against your ISP TOS. You should be using a BUSINESS account for that.
Thirdly do you think that ISPs care if they lose the top 1% of users? Hell no. ISPs love Grandmas paying $50 a month to read e-mail 3 times a week than they do someone using their $50 conenction to stream netflix all day long. |

1 edit | reply to maartena DSLExtreme resells AT&T DSL. They may not have a choice but to follow AT&T's lead.
Fortunately Comcast was first to set what I consider a reasonable cap. Time Warner is clearly looking to screw their customers over, based on their antics in Beaumont. I will be very interested to see what AT&T does.

| reply to BF69 But if both Gram'ma and the Netflixer are profitable then why not have both?
As far as game servers go, if you aren't charging for the game servers, it's fine for a residential connection, right? If not, can I have an educational rate for my 'net connection? A significant minority of my traffic goes about 10ms away to my school, or comes from my school as I grab documents or VNC sessions bfrom back at my apartment from on the schol network.
What's interesting is that the top 1% of users is also the most evangelical of users. That is to say, if you kick me off of my internet I will spread word around everywhere "I don't know about Brand X Internet, they kicked me of". Not good PR. If you have unlimited service and then institute caps, welcome to your little friend, the vocal minority. |
