I guess I'm the only dissenter amongst the group..

I did a pricematch "comparison" if you will of like parts, and found that Newegg, even with the taxes and UPS (UPS isn't too bad in my neck of the woods) shipping fees, it was cheaper than buying @ NCIX.

If you are looking for specific parts, maybe NCIX is the way to go, but for my folks, I was just pricing out a barebones system for them that at least brings them into the 21st century, but heck they don't game or have bells and whistles...I'm replacing an ancient Celery 800mhz box here .

It was cheaper for me to get an ECS board/E1200 combo, 250gb hdd/2 gig ram/new power supply, shipping/tax in
$291.89 at newegg

$304.69 at ncix

So not a huge difference, but to wait for shipping from out west, takes longer, UPS is generally faster in my area.

I don't have any other viable options, all the computer stores in this city are way over-priced, so...online is really my only option.

And hey if I can save 13 bucks...I'll save it...but yeah it doesn't seem as bad for me for what I want, but as they say to each their own.
ARe you guys all nuts 14 bucks to ship 2 sticks of memory? Or a burner.. it looks like the base price to my place is $14.60 and goes up from there (for UPS Standard).

The burner is competitively priced, but once you add in the shipping, it quickly becomes uncompetitive.

Canada post is cheap for "brokerage" fees. Name one courier company that will charge you $5 for clearing your goods for you.

PST/GST/Duty are all the same

Is that really brokerage? Do they give a flying fig what the item is or its customs classification or who the recipient is? From what I've observed, the way it seems to work is that they see a value and some drone operates a calculator using maximum customs rates and that's it. If that process can't pay for itself and still be hugely profitable, they shouldn't be doing it!

That said, UPS is a far, far bigger ripoff!

I sent them an email asking where they ship Canadian orders from. Here's the reply I just received:

-------
Reference number: LTK436050495X Please use this ticket number in any correspondence with Newegg.ca.

Subject: Newegg.ca - >(Mail #021020081912488)*

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting Newegg.

Unfortunately the item will be shipping from warehouse in the U.S., at this time we don't have locations in Canada.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please visit our FAQs page. If you still need assistance, please feel free to email me directly and I will be happy to assist you.

Thank you,

Jacqueline Ruiz

it is brokerage if you look a the form on your package, you'll see an H.S. code (or classification code).

You can call Revenue Canada or whoever it is this week to check if you are getting taken on duties

I have something on the way via USPS Expedited and Canada Post. I'm hoping it makes it through under the Customs radar but if not I'll look more closely at how it was assessed.

Dont forget NCIX doesn't link there sales into the regular webpages. So if you didn't look at the onsale page, you wouldn't see the best price. It's always been my pet peeve of NCIX, that you have to link to the item of the sale page to see the sale price. So you're searching items, you see the regular price not the sale price.

I think the $5 may be the GST "handling fee".

UPS is the worst I have used for brokerage fees. FedEx is better but not by that much. When I was buying antique pocket watches on eBay some sellers would only ship UPS. You really had to watch (pardon the pun) what you bought as the UPS brokerage fees could be 33% of the cost of the watch.

If what you buy can fit in a standard envelope it will go right through Customs. People who collect stamps or old paper money laugh all the time. My buddy is a paper money collector. He paid $400 for an old (1920's) Bank of Nova Scotia $10 bill....slid right through customs. Yet I can buy a none working 100 year old pocket watch for $40 and I'll have to pay GST. If the watch price is much over that I'll get nailed for an "excise tax". The weird part is it's hit and miss. You never know what you'll be hit with.

Regardless of what it is, the cost is $5 compared to "unlimited" with the courier companies.

In addition to a camera accessory that is coming via USPS expedited, I just ordered a vintage book I've been looking forward to owning for a long time, which cost quite a lot and is coming from Australia. I think I'll soon have a few stories to contribute about Canada Post and Customs!

As someone said, it really is hit-and-miss whether they nab you for duties and taxes, but it also greatly depends on the value. I ordered some books from the U.K. not long ago (they were not available either here or in the U.S.) and they came in two deliveries. The first was just one book, and it arrived completely free of any costs, just stuffed into my mailbox. The second was all the rest of them -- about three or four together -- and my mailperson stood there with her hand outstretched to receive the contents of my wallet.

Just great! I used Newegg.Ca's $20 off coupon to order a heat sink and I just got my shipping notice. It says"

UPS Tracking Number:
*******************
(Shipped from La Puente, CA)

I better not see some UPS brokerage fees and custom fees again as I was not expecting this to be shipped from the US. I thought in stock meant in Canada at their new warehouse (which does not seem to exist then).

That does explain the $16 shipping fee though.

NewEgg takes care of all brokerage and taxes.

Hope so. I got UPSed up the bum big time recently when I ordered my Radeon 4870 1GB directly from Diamond to take advantage of another email coupon. After the customs and brokerage fees of $97 total, I ended up saving just $6 compared to buying it at NCIX.
