It's up to them to pay those fees at some point in the future - as they have an importer type account and UPS doesn't do their brokerage - just their shipping. Yet I can buy a none working 100 year old pocket watch for $40 and I'll have to pay GST. If the watch price is much over that I'll get nailed for an "excise tax". The weird part is it's hit and miss. FedEx is better but not by that much. When I was buying antique pocket watches on eBay some sellers would only ship UPS. You really had to watch (pardon the pun) what you bought as the UPS brokerage fees could be 33% of the cost of the watch.

If what you buy can fit in a standard envelope it will go right through Customs. People who collect stamps or old paper money laugh all the time. My buddy is a paper money collector. He paid $400 for an old (1920's) Bank of Nova Scotia $10 bill....slid right through customs. Yet I can buy a none working 100 year old pocket watch for $40 and I'll have to pay GST. If the watch price is much over that I'll get nailed for an "excise tax". The weird part is it's hit and miss. And it would seem to run against UPS practice. Normally, in my experience, they collect that amount on delivery.

It's a pre-cleared drop shipment. Newegg doesn't have a shipping warehouse in Canada, but they do have a business number and are a "Non-Resident Importer". Your order is placed through the Canadian office. They do a pre-cleared drop shipment from the warehouse in the US - all duties, taxes, etc. are processed as if the shipment was from "Newegg US to Newegg Canada" - and are charged to the Newegg business number - while the package actually goes to your location.

UPS will just charge standard shipping fees to Newegg, and a small "handling" fee for processing the parcels at customs. Want to know more read here:

This used to be something I did regularly - but on the Canadian side as an importer - I got an "RM" number (it looks just like a GST number but ends in RM0001 instead of RT0001) -- when I was having things sent from suppliers in the US I supplied that RM number and whoever the carrier was, they would just give customs the invoice and my RM number. I would then be "obliged" to file RM returns to Canada Customs and make estimated payments and essentially a tax return annually to pay for imports.

This essentially lets Newegg use whichever shipper gave them the lowest rates and best terms, and your shipping fees are still manageable and similar to if you bought from a Canadian located retail business. You don't get "UPS-raped".

However, if Newegg is coming to Canada, they will have a long way top go to beat NCIX. NCIX not charging 8% PST for Ontario residents is a major competitive advantage, as are their low cost shipping deals. I just purchased an nVidia GTX 260 for $239 plus shipping and PST and after a $40 MIR ($278 total cost). :D

I just purchased a 1GB 4870 direct from Diamond Multimedia in California for $299 with $15 shipping (total $314) and no taxes whatsoever. Just hoping customs won't do me in the butt too badly but as the Sapphire equivalent sells for $369 in Ottawa, plus taxes, I think I'll come out ahead even with some reasonable duties.

My local reseller is buying my factory-overclocked 3870 and I'm selling some textbooks so this will end up costing me about $50 for doubling my speed and my VRAM (Oblivion sometimes takes up to 950MB of VRAM with the detailed textures I'm using).
