[modem/router] get a second dsl modem?

I recently switched back to Verizon DSL from cable. I am using the supplied Westell 6100F modem and my dsl line is now a "dry line" with no POTS. I have been trying to connect wirelessly to my PS3 downstairs (with no success) and it occurred to me to plug the dsl modem in directly to the PS3. It works great! I want to keep a dsl connection in the outlet where my ps3 is located without unhooking my modem from my computer/router every time I want internet connectivity for my PS3, so my question is: can I use any Verizon-compatible dsl modem for a second access point or does it have to be the same model Westell 6100F modem? Thanks for your response.

It sounds like you need a router. You can go pick yourself up a decent one that will do wireless or is just a switch only, and you can keep your current Westell 6100F. The Westell has it's own router in it so if you want to go all Ethernet, simply attaching a switch to the Ethernet port on it should make things work out.

My wireless router is not working with the ps3 and I have tried everything.

A phone jack is conveniently located next to my tv & ps3. If I pick up a cheap verizon-compatible dsl modem, then I should be able to have 2 separate jacks that can supply the dsl connection, right? So if I want a direct connection to the ps3, I should be able to turn off my modem that's connected to the computer, then turn on the modem that's connected to the ps3 (un-sync-ing to the computer upstairs and then re-sync-ing to the ps3 downstairs), then vice-versa when I want internet connectivity to the computer. That would work, right?

yes that should work, as long as both modems are configured properly, and provided that both modems are not turned on at the same time. That also depends on how Verizon has your area setup, some areas are DHCP, and others are PPPoE. The PPPoE areas are a little easier to deal with, as far as what you're considering doing, although it's doable in both areas if you know what you're doing.

Sounds like it will work. By the way, with your current router not working with the PS3, is it because you're getting NAT 3? If so, you need to bridge the Westell 6100F and that should then turn to NAT 2 once your router is taking care of the PPPoE.
