A 1bit response is not possible. How would it know where to send the 0 or 1 to? You still need a packet header that includes at least the destination of the 0 or 1 response. Which would at least be the phone number, which would have to be represented by 40 bits. Not to mention that you need some bits to tell the receiving phone that it's an SMS message, as well as which SMS message was being confirmed.

If a phone just received a 0 or 1 all by itself, how exactly would it know what it's for? Or even if it was the phone that was supposed to get the message?
