tx_tower : there are several providers here in central texas that are like that, no set rate. u get a min of 128k up to network capacity. I would never pay money for that but apparently some do. Also I would tell your provider to grow up and get away from OTC(crap).

timmy2 : Thanks for responding.

They don't have a tiered system and no quoted minimum or maximum speed.

I don't see anything in my post (nor was it my intent) to say that any of their hardware is off-the-shelf. Perhaps you're referring to my comment about OTC equipment (a brand) for the last link to my home. I recall the installer saying something about OTC operating at a different frequency and being more omnidirectional than Canopy, so they're using OTC to cover our canyon. I wonder if this reduces the throughput, although because the up and down speed was around 1.5mbps during first couple of weeks my hunch is that the OTC stuff is not the issue.

shorthairedp : what is your contracted rate, thats what is relevant here, not what the radio system is capable of. how are they subscribing you with off the shelf products when you claim this to be a canopy system, canopy is not off the shelf.

timmy2 : I'm trying out a Canopy-based system in far west Texas as a potential subscriber. This past week during normal use it's incredibly slow so I tested it using various bandwidth test sites (Speed.io, speedtest.net, speakeasy, speed test here, etc.). Friday during the day I was seeing speeds of 200kbps to 600kbps down; today (Sunday, midday) I'm seeing speeds of 70kbps to 130kbps down, with 60kbps up.

I'm told they have about 40 subscribers using a single 1.5mb T1 line. They say they recently installed some sort of bandwidth allocation device in the system. Are the speeds I'm experiencing reasonable given the number of subscribers? They say they have a second T1 line on order but it won't be online for another month. Is there anything else that they could do to improve performance in the meantime?

I should add that when it was first installed (~4 weeks ago) it was yielding speeds of 1.5mbps up and down. After a 2 day outage a week ago it started yielding the abysmal speeds. I asked if they'd "fixed" the outage by slowing it down but they say no. Also, FWIW, note that they are using OTC equipment to beam the signal down to my house from a nearby hill. Could the bandwidth allocation box be causing this??
