gsquare : I just had a strange problem fixed by trouble ticket and follow up.
I am sitting on Comcast with a 502 sitting infront of my router, on Megatron, BYOE. A couple days ago I found that I was getting EMail Voice Mail advisories from VT; however a *12 would announce that I had nothing in my inbox, I had no stutter dialtone, and my VM light was not on my phones. My control panel even said I did not have VM in its inbox. Very strange, because I had gotten the VM via Email. I trouble ticketed it to VT and quick as a bunny RON came back and told me to switch my SIP Port from 5060 to 5080. That fixed it. I have used 5060 for over two years with both PAP-2T and now the HT-502. Good call by VT customer support.

I have had generally good service with VT using the PAP-2T BYOE. Other than during the network Upgrade of a year ago July, I think, and the Rocketeers arrival, there were some issues, but reasonably good service. I have been using the GS BYOE in front of my Linksys router for past month. I have seen a measurable improvement in my service. Quick connections, crisp audio, no dropped calls, no dialing into dead air, no occasional latency in any connections. I asked the little lady, how's the phone lately and she said its a lot better. Thats a biggie!!! I also have not seen any indication that the GS in front of the router has any impact. I forward ports for two surveillance cameras for remote access, forwarding port to the Linksys and then on again to the Cameras. They work fine. So thats my take on the GS vrs the PAP behind the router.

No matter how I configure it, in the DMZ/VLAN/fwd ports or not, it does not work. The best I can get it is to connect on calls only to other viatalk subscribers (this is with ports forwarded & a fw rule that forwards/allows H.232 to the adapter).

I would prefer to have it behind the router, but if I can setup my Checkpoint in the DMZ of the 502 I think that would suffice. Basically, I want all non-VoIP traffic to go to the Checkpoint. However, I have been unable to configure the 502 DMZ setting - the settings are also just too simplistic and I cant' do near as much as I can with the Checkpoint obviously. I did back off on the audio gain because the audio seemed unusually loud with the GS. Currently I have one desk set, two portable base stations and one old line powered hand set down in my workshop. Also have my Direct TV receiver and my PC fax modem in manual answer, all on line 1 and all working fine. One thing that might be a benefit for me is that all my jacks come back independently to an RJ junction block where my adapter fires the lines. No daisy chaining jacks.

I was able to disable it by removing the Config Server Path. Make sure you write this down, as you may need to enter it again in order to turn provisioning back on. I really did not have to do anything else. Just make sure you power everything off, then turn on your modem, let is configure, then the HT and wait, then your router. This will ensure proper IP assignments. As far as your router, there should be nothing else to configure.
As far as the drop outs, you may also try changing the jitter from Fixed to Adaptive, and change the level. It defaults to Fixed Medium. I have not had a chance to tweak yet. One last thing would be the up and downlink bandwith. Try to set for 128K. With comcast you should be fine, and for 2 calls (port 1 and 2) should be enough bandwith. If not, bump it up a bit.
Access to the CP should be at the 192.168.2.1 addrss, and for your router whatever your DNS server address is (192.168.1.1?)
mogulman : In the interest of one thread.. and since TJ was first:

I know ptrowski said he was going to create a thread. Thought I would beat him to it :)

I was one of the original beta testers of the new (for VT) Grandstream HT-502. This device is a little different from the PAP2T because it has a built-in NAT Router, DHCP Server. It can be used in front of an existing network (PAP2T can't really do this well) or behind a router (like the PAP2T). It could also be used instead of a router. You could use the HT-502 as a router and then just use a switch to hook up all your PCs.

The web admin interface on the HT-502 has a lot less options then the PAP2T. I find it a little easier to understand, though.

When I first got the device, I tried it in front of my router. I did set the DMZ setting in the HT-502 to point to my router, so that all incoming non-voip stuff would be handled by my router. Then I just set up any port forwarding I needed for things on my network using my router's port forwarding (VNC, Slingbox, etc). I didn't end up using the device in this configuration very long as I have multiple VoIP boxes and didn't really want the HT-502 in front. For non-techies and/or people who don't have multiple VoIP boxes, putting the HT-502 in front of a router is probably the easiest solution.

I tried the device behind my router and it worked just as well as my PAP2T. The only thing I've noticed so far is that the Line1/Line2 lights don't light up the same way as a PAP2T when you aren't making a call. So its a little harder to see if the device is 100% connected to it's proxy server. Also, I notice that the audio is a little louder on the receiving side. I initially tried it a few months ago without provisioning because that wasn't available yet.

Last week I had Viatalk provision the adapter to try this out. They gave me the ID to put into the provisioning part of the adapter. It took a minute or two and it was done. The cool thing was everything was set up perfectly. I don't know if this is VT improving their provisioning files or the HT-502. I didn't have to ask for any manual changes. Timezone was right, dialplan was correct. Everything seems to be working perfectly.
