I think the providers will eventually hit a ceiling on these additional $4.99 charges for each new feature that they bring out and will have to provide them to retain customers kinda along the lines of telcos when VOIP offered feature rich packages.
Personally I have MythTV on my desktop which does most of these features. I have a media mvp in each room ($60) that will allow me to view tv and/or recorded content/music/photos/weather or traffic.
