Re: [TWC] NYC - Slow Speeds, Part 2

Modem/TV was down the whole morning, called up TW and voice mail told me they were working right on my block, here's my speeds. I never get these speeds at this time 5pm, Im at 10038 zip (LES/ Downtown) in Manhattan. Hopefully it can stay like this, Ive been having horrible speeds from RR for far too long.

Ive had called into TWC nearly every day for the past week. On Friday someone from Tier 3 called me back to let me know the problem was escalated, and should be rectified. I told them the problem starts around 8pm, so I check it out and see.

That Friday latency was improved (down to 500ms from 700ms), but still horrible. On Saturday latency was tolerable (200ms). Sunday latency was back to 600ms.

One would think that this 10Gig Router is congested/saturated in the evenings, and on the weekends (Fri/Sat) the problem isnt as severe because fewer people are online.

TWC's evaluation and escalation process is geared towards those with absolutely no knowledge about computer or networking. For anyone who has worked with a computer or has any network knowledge, its not rocket science to determine where about the problem is. There techs (even Tier 3) are like tits on a bull. They spend more time asking if I am behind a linksys router, then looking at the information, logs, traces we provide to them.

It takes two managers/supervisors to have an issue escalated at all from Tier 3. Its like they have system in place which prevents anything from getting past Tier 3.

These Tier 3 guys (most of the ones that I have dealt with), are just more technical canned script readers (Are you behind a modem, did you reset your modem, what OS are you running ...).

Every day I call TWC for my credit and every day I file a complaint with DoITT.

guys and gals.
there is a problem, still.
on friday and saturday nights the internet is not as saturated, more people are not on it. i had good gaming on friday and saturday. sunday was lagged again. this has been going on for 2+ weeks. unplayable.
I suggest we use our tracerts rather than speedtests, or both.
the problem has just started for me tonight. i changed my modem to entertain level 3. here are my tracerts with time documentations.

Confirmed for Brooklyn as well.

The speedtest to RR's server seems to give normal speed, so this should be a problem with their internet connectivity pure and simple.

I've been seeing this problem for a few days. I called them thinking it should be easy getting a status on it and hopefully hearing that it is being fixed, but of course the new layers of "support" they put on means that I need to spend at least 30 minutes on the phone before getting anyone who knows what ping is. It is hard work even telling them they have a problem.

looks like they fixed whatever was wrong in my apt building, I was getting horrible speeds for a year. I will still be switching to FIOS when its available because RR waited for Verizon to light a fire under there ass to fix things around here.

Been having these speeds for a couple of days, never had this before.

problem still exists.
called level 3 again tonight after emailing all my tracerts yesterday.
tech said this was submitted to "G-NOC"yesterday. 24-48 hours Ill get a call.

A supervisor of Tier 3 tech support responded to one of my emails to let me know that since this is clearly a problem with TWC's network, the problem has been escalated to their Network group.

Whether or not they get someone over to that Newark node to install some new servers is the real question...

I'm sick of 600+ pings every night at primetime.

I'm having the SAME EXACT PROBLEM as you guys. After 8pm, my speeds would be CRAWLING and I just had a tech come in because of that problem and he told me that he couldn't do anything about that because it sounds like it's congestion and he/twc can't do anything about that. He said that the internet is only for "web browsing" and they will soon charge people for the "extra bandwidth" they use on top of the monthly bill. I've never heard of this bullshit before and right now the speeds I get between that time is 500kb-3mb and with those speeds I can't even do anything when I play online games because the ping is so high. Before the ping would be as high as 500-600ms. [I just copied what I wrote before, haha --;;]

Here are my tech visits so far:

1. Replaced splitters and connectors
2. Replaced old cable line for possible leakage
3. Replaced cable from pole for possible leakage

Nothing has helped so far. While downloading ONE file, my speeds drop down to 300kbps which is ridiculous. I will be contacted TW again tonight to have it escalated to the engineers. From what one of the level 3 techs said, two tech visits to the premises within 1 month and no resolution will be escalated and network engineers will be contacted.

You pretty much summed up my same complaint since I too am from Elmhurst 11373.

After 8pm, the internet is slower than the coldest bottle of Maple syrup.

Hey, I'm from Elmhurst 11373 too. My Earthlink connection went down Saturday morning. Rebooted my modem and was able to browse but did dslreports speed test and now getting ~250kbps down and 400 kbps up. Before I was getting ~3mb down. It has been like this since today. I called Tech Support and wasted my time for an hour doing tracert and rr speed test. RR speed test did show that dl speed was topping 3mb, though. My tracert to yahoo.com doesn't even complete. Tech level 3 said signal to modem is fine, blah blah. He also said a lot of people from my area has been complaining about latency and there is nothing I can do about it. Anybody else from Elmhurst had their connection slow down since Saturday?

I followed some advice on here earlier this year and wrote to the Attorney General Cuomo regarding TWC's abuse and effectively false advertising for services. They said they've received complaints and would look into my case specifically. 2 Weeks later I got a followup letter from the AG, with a reply from TWC concerning "my issues". They claim because I changed my cable modem, and canceled a tech support visit (done in 2006, well before my myriad complaints in 2007 when HD video was piped into the limited bandwidth) that I was "satisfied with my service" and the problem had been resolved. An obvious lie, and anyone expecting them to give 2 cents is seriously misled. I plan on beginning taking daily speed-test records of on and off peak hours and take them to small claims court, I suggest everyone do the same.

Ahhhhh, this is great. TW is blaming my router!!! So just to make the tech happy, I connected my modem directly to my PC and my speeds were slower. The tech then tells me I have to be connected for 1 hr.

Well you're lucky. It's been going on for the longest for me. I've never really been a heavy user at night but recently have been on the internet more so I started making an issue out of it.

BTW, speeds are slower when connected directly to modem!!

On days like this, I do miss Mach 20 from RCN. At least the speeds there worked 85% of the time.

So I have escalated the problem to a network engineer. If you guys have the patience, be very persistent!!

Just a small update, a network engineer called me today and informed me there is a problem in my area (Flushing, NY) and they are working on it. Hopefully they get this resolved as soon as possible.

I know of that, and I mentioned that to Level 3 support plenty of times. I'm going to follow up with Internal support tomorrow because I see no changes in speed today.

Aren't you guys lucky. I was getting an amazing 300kbps download pretty much all of yesterday. This is really pissing me off now.

I wish I could call it luck. I get nearly the same speeds you do during prime time hours. This test was done at 7:10am this morning when the network has close to no users on. This is now the network "should" be working 95% of the time, all the time with a good number of users sharing the bandwidth.

My connection been solid since the first Slow Speed in nyc. Been over 7-8 month and no speed problem. What piss me off is that only RR user are getting the Power Boost, If your with Earthlink or other ISP trough TWC you will not see power boost
