bgl : My mother had been having problems in the last few days receiving mail on her comcast e-mail (via OE) (no prob w/webmail)

Against what should have been better judgment, i assumed the issue was specific to her PC & drove to her house.

Upon getting there & doing some trouble shooting, it was becoming obvious the issue wasn't specific to her computer.

Endless timeouts on the mail server(s) all around, also attempted to telnet (connect) to the mail server manually.

Removed AV, even removed the account from OE & re-added it, nothing. Still getting timeouts. Pretty clean computer at that point.

I then powered up another laptop, that is not connected to comcast but at&t wireless BB. Added her account to an OE client on it also, .. same issue persisted.

Note: i watched the host names that mail.comcast.net was forwarding to (the then ACTUAL server being used) & it was primarily east coast, CT, NJ, however i caught a CA server in the mix so i duno - i'd even (then) tried pop3.comcast.net on both machines i think.

Did i mention i even checked/dumped & emptied the hosts files?

I then called Comcast who on the face was reluctant to even acknowledge that there may be a ~wide mail (server) problem. As if this tech didn't just hangup w/some one w/an e-mail problem.

Anyways, after some pointless simple t-shooting steps i'm then informed that in order for them to look into the issue (which apparently they needed to do using this account, re: guinea pig) i have to take a case #, let them change the password, and they'll call back when it's fixed & w/a new password.

Surely everyone is looking forward to having their parents accounts dissected into what will be 10x more difficult for them to deal with. REALLY looking forward to the 'end' on this.

At one point the technician said suspending (+/-duration) & re-activating the account may help fix the problem. I don't recall if he was talking about her comcast account as a whole or her e-mail, regardless no ones looking forward to any (new) issue as a result of doing that.

So i take a case #, let them use her account for testing ('escalated') & hangup on the hope of them calling back.

Did i mention that was yesterday afternoon? Yeah No call back ever came & she still can't POP in her e-mail.

Honestly i really wish she'd just ditch @comcast.net e-mail & just go w/gmail, or some other non-isp specific something.

And are you using EMTAs or Cable Modems?

I have been having this problem (among others) for over a year now. I have a Belkin N1 router (don't buy it, no matter how good the price) and use the Comcast EMTA for Internet service. In addition to the Outlook 2003 password box, I regularly get dumped for no reason, and have to reset the EMTA and recycle the router before I get back on. Except for today, that is, when nothing I do will work. I had to direct connect to the EMTA to get access to the Internet, but now my entire family is upset because they can't get on the 'net.

At the end of November, after several phone calls, screen shots, and personal visits to Comcast's Richmond office, most of my problems were resolved. Then I left town for two weeks, and all my access problems have returned, including the password box. At one time I suspected that it was because I had more than one computer logged on to e-mail at the same time, but thanks to this forum, I now realize that had nothing to do with it.

anon : Here it is, for the last time. These are the instructions for getting Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail to work properly on your PC.

First, are you using any incarnation of Norton Internet Security? If so, the Symantec/Norton folks have an article about problems like this, so their suggestions should be attempted first. They have a troubleshooting routine you can run from that webpage. If that fails, they suggest removing and reinstalling Norton. Personally, I'd skip the "reinstalling" part.

If you're using McAfee or Norton, disable the wormstopper or Internet worm protection in its email settings. And I am having the same problem as others -- not able to manage my account on the old system, and not able to reach a server with the new system (a DNS screwup of some kind).

Today I had many calls into comcast support -- and i'll give them credit, they did TRY to help me get this fixed -- but in the end they not only suspended my account, but also changed the PIN and "secret question". So the account could not be reactivated. Had to contact their "Security team" and claim my account had been "breached"; i.e. hacked. Only then did I manage to get someone to assign a new pin and password that let me back in to my own account.

Bottom line, we are neither here, nor there. Cant use the old webmail system because the migration is pending, but cant use the new one either because the migration is not complete.
