anon posted : I've recently become a TWC customer and I've had nothing but problems until today. We'll see how it goes at peak time this evening, but I thought this story might give other insight into problems with speed and packet loss.

1 - Initial Install of Roadrunner 7mbps down/768kbps up internet.
The tech left me with a Ubee wireless router/modem combo, even though I already have my own router. Pingtest.net was showing 85% packet loss, and I never got above 2-3 mbps download.

2 - Phone support says that everything is fine with the Ubee modem, full signal etc. They schedule an appointment for another tech to come a whole week later. I convince them to send me someone sooner.

3 - After speaking with Level 3 tech support, they switched the Ubee router/modem combo into Bridge mode and the Packet Loss was totally fixed. Speeds are still slow.

4 - Level 3 tech comes to the house and swaps the modem. Speeds are still only 2-4mbps and at this point I add Turbo, which should get me up to 15mbps.

5 - Phone support confirms I should be getting more speed even during peak time, and they arrange to send a 'Senior Technician'.

6 - Dude came today and gave me yet another modem, which looks exactly the same but has a 00 24 MAC address instead of a 00:18 MAC address. He says this makes all the difference as the 00:24 models can support Turbo speeds.

Now I'm getting 15-20mbps download, Pings under 20ms and 0% packet loss. Why don't they just train these people to do it right the first time? Why isn't this information shared? Why the hell wasn't there a memo at any point saying 'Don't give these crappy modems to customers with Turbo?' or 'Put the Ubee router/modem combos in bridge mode to eliminate packet loss'?

ON traces those hops I listed post earlier have complete time out and sometimes entire trace just dies there. Not sure if something is being worked on or whether something locally here is dying or maybe even modem is crappin out but this is just really annoying.

kilrathi posted : Well problems are back after about 5 months of no issues. This time its incoming packet loss and speeds that simply come to a halt during peak times. I could deal with speed itself dropping but when u also have packet loss it makes it bad to play video games.

I have 50/5 Wideband with sb 6850 modem in queens. For past week I noticed weird things occur in games I play so I decided to monitor speeds and packet loss. Sure enough things are getting worse. Currently at 7pm EST speeds flactuate between 50Mbps and 10Kbps. Basically it could be going fast then bam nearly complete crawl, along with it there is incoming packet loss.

Its hard to determine whats up but possibly hardware or some other issue at TW end as maybe they overloaded some node.

After combining some traces along when the slowdowns and packet loss occur it looks like usually the problem occurs at hops such as: ae6-nyquny91-rtr002.nyc.rr.com [24.29.148.254]

Based on RR page they will be doing some work this week in queens, jamaica, I hope this will be related to the issue because paying $100 for their top tier internet package and getting this crap is not acceptable.

pilozm posted : it was soooo slow yesterday that i had to call TWC support.
They made me do the usual reboots and remove my router from the equation. Still very slow (2 Mbps).
The guy said I could schedule a tech visit. Or I could replace the cable modem and splitter.
I just replaced the cable modem. My connection is now running at 11.3Mbps. Better, but not what I paid for. I;m going to replace the splitter tomorrow and see if that make a difference.
In the end, I believe this is due to the RR network, because I get acceptable number in the AM. Low speeds mostly happen after 6pm.
