anon : I just tried the SharePort Network USB Utility and it created a BSOD on three different systems (two PC were less than 1 month old so not much software installed) - 3 different OS Vista Business, XP Pro and Media Center XP. The only common software was Trend Micro Internet Security and I turned it off and still got BSOD after installing (at end of install actually). This is the second time they've got me by sticking a totally useless USB port in back of their router (still USB 1.1 at that). The first was a DI-624S (2 useless USB ports) which was an OK router but nothing connected to those USB ports could ever be seen on the LAN. You'd think I'd learn.

ratts : Well, where to begin.......

first off, I haven't fully tweaked my router cause it appears I need a PHD in networking to even understand 75% of the options offered with this router (A3 rev. DIR-655). I have been reading up on some of the stuff thru the support section in router and didn't even realize what I bought. (I bought it originally because it is a Gig router)
Anyhow, I just did a update check thru router and it said there was a new firmware and decided to download and install this 1.21 firmware. I thought the last firmware was overwelming, now there is more options to boot. GOOD GRIEF!
I didn't even know that usb port on back was for connecting devices to it. I thought it was for hooking up a laptop or desktop pc to router thru usb. SWEET!!!! So, after reading up on this thread, I decided to download the shareport utility and start tweaking and whatnot. There are bugs with this firmware. Nothing major (at least no random disconnects like my last 624 rev. c router I had...Piece of you know what!) I activated the Guest account and saved the settings.....then I checked reboot later option. Went to another tab to see what was in there and to my suprise the router rebooted on it's own. Then, after logging back into router I lost connection (like my old router). But, it hasn't happened again yet so.....Oh well. There was another slight bug where one setting would not uncheck and save. It kept telling me I didn't change anything but I did, I tried to uncheck it again...samething. I cannot ucheck that option. (Add DHCP Reservation on/off) oh Yeah, forgot another one. My wife's 54mb wireless computer is capped at 24mb. Have to investigate this more closely. If it is capped, then this a major bug cause I didn't see any option to get it back to 54mb. Could have been capped before cause it never showed speed in status page. Hmmmmmm????

Overall, I was very pleased when I first got this router but now I am REALLY PLEASED. Great job Dlink!!!

ps...I did see in the support section that it states NOT to connect more than ONE USB Flash drive at once, even with a usb hub.

anon : What I am very happy to see is that dlink is listening to it's customers. I had wrote them a few emails relating to added features which would help them in marketing for the dir655 and one of those features was to enable that usb port for something other than the dreaded windows easy connect feature which I dont think anyone uses. I am sure many others have wrote dlink similar emails and I am happy that they are listening to us.

I have yet to try the firmware but damn excited in doing so. I suspect that usb port is only ver 1.1 though but would be nice to throw my HDD on there along with the printer.

My only grip is the utility. Be nice if they used SMB or some other solution other than the direction they are going with the utility. Then again, it's not meant to be a NAS device, so I'll be leaniant.

One other grip I had was the Wireless Connection information. It would show the MAC address, IP address of a connected device along with the SSID it's connected too. So if a computer is having signal issues it's a little difficult to figure out which computer the ip address belongs to, without going to some other menu, leaving the status page. Inconvenient to say the least. I requested them change the SSID info to the computer name since we who maintain our own networks obviously know what the routers SSID is. No need for a computer to report in the status page the SSID of the router.

I don't think i'm for the secure spot application however some features are nice, I wouldnt be one to pay a yearly fee for it just for updates, which I would assume be virus definition updates. Using a macafee license to install in the router, i'm guessing it's a loyalty fee or something.

Anyways, still pleased to see again, as I re-iterate, that dlink is listening to it's customers to make it's top end router pull above the rest or at least come to par with other routers on the market.

Oh, can't wait to see if they impliment something better for the external ip address filtering. I requested the ability to upload a text file containing known bad sites, like some 3rd party appications have.

Gotta hand it to D-Link!

Edit 3: It isn't true NAS as only one user can use a device at a time, but it does show a request window for the user to disconnect so that another user can use it if you try to connect to an in use device.

Edit 4: Wow, look how many devices I have attached. Every one of them works except the webcam. Whenever I try to bring up a picture or even just use the mic, whatever app I'm using hangs for a minute, then I get the "device unplugged" noise from vista, the dlink utility blanks out the list of all devices for a second, then brings it back with the webcam "waiting for connection". If I connect again the process repeats itself. Could be a problem with d-link's driver, or just an issue with the speed of the link. Either way it shouldn't disconnect and clear out the list momentarily like it does, sounds like dlink's driver is the one that gets stuck and resets itself.
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

Yes, it works with a hub.

Another user requests to use a device I'm using

woo 4 devices used on different pcs!
