[Speed] High ping

1) Your location: City and State.

Reading, PA

2) A description of the problem.

Very high ping. I used average around 40-60 now it goes from from 400 - 900.

3) Is the issue intermittent, constant or does it occur at a specific time of day?

Well it started today but its been constant through out the day. However if i reset my modem, unplug my modem, or restart my comp it goes back to normal but only for a short time.

4) Your modem make, model & firmware version. How to find firmware version:

Comcast Netgear Wireless cable modem CG814WG

5) Describe any home networking if applicable. (i.e. routers, hubs, adapters, etc.) My and my brothers computers share the same internet. This problem has happened before but went away. If i turn his internet off mines works perfectly but if his is on it works.

6) List any firewall and/or anti-virus software you have installed. Include what version you have.

AVG:Free version, Ad-Aware, and Search and Destroy.

I did a speed test and my results were

latency - 423
Download - 248kb
Upload - 114kb

I tried a tweak test but said the servers are offline.

Speed test to where?
Is your brother running P2P or anything else that is active?
If his computer is using the connection, your speed test will be - low.

Open a Command window and ping www.google.com

Try the tweak test again, it just worked for me.

Did you say that it works when you disconnect your brother's PC, but when you hook it back up the internet tanks again? Are you sure that he doesn't have anything (torrents, limewire, etc) that could be saturating the connection? The fact that it takes a few moments to get bad again after you reset the equipment is consistent with that as well. If you're comfortable posting your equipment MAC address I can check it out for you, but otherwise check his running applications and see what's there.

Almost positive he's downloading something through torrents or whatever. The thing is he has always done that and my computer never had any side effects from it. Suddenly today it gives me problems.

If he's changed his upload limiting settings or switched clients without configuring it, it's possible that he's completely saturating your upstream where he wasn't before. That'll pretty much take out your whole connection if that's the case. Unfortunately, there's no traffic shaping capability in the home networking firmware, so you can't go that route. Try playing with his upload limits and make sure they're something reasonable.

If his brother is the culprit, an auto-connect setting must be enforced. The connection is just fine for "a short time"
