When my sister tried to get verizon service she had to get a credit check and they came back and said they wanted $400 security deposit. I can't see them charging $400 for a month to month plan especially when they aren't giving you a discount on a phone. |

| I was wondering the same thing. I tried to get a month to month plan last year with them, and they wanted a $800 security deposit up front. Since they are no longer giving you the phone for free, I wonder if they are letting some people who have less than perfect credit in the door. I ended up going with Net 10 pre-paid. They now have an unlimited voice and text plan for $79.98 a month. |

They want to minimize their exposure to bad debt so If your credit is less than stellar, the only thing that has changed is that you are not locked into a long term contract. The person "intending to not pay the bills" could still run up a huge bill and not pay it, irrespective of contract versus no-contract.
The discount on the phone has nothing to do with the deposit and yes I understand that you get the phone cheaper because the payments are spread out longer etc. but don't expect them to lighten up their requirements if you are a risk. That is a totally different issue. |

That is a totally different issue. Well first of all no one is going to shell out $400 deposit for phone service that may last one or 2 months. Might as well get a years worth of pre-paid. Secondly if they are worried about overages there is no reason why, like pre-paid, when you hit your minute limits you get your service cut off.
Also to say the cost of the phone is a differnt issue doesn't make sense. If the phone company is givng you a $200 discount on tehphone you can be damn sure that part of that $400 is there because they want to make sure if you bail out after a few months they recoup that money. The whole reason why you'd get a $200 discount is because they a re counting on 24 payments of $40 or more to cover the cost of the discount on the phone. If there is no contract and there is no discount then there is no expectation of 24 consecutive payments. Ergo there shouldn't be a security deposit. Besides there are 22 week-days in a month. Times that by 15 hours durring which minutes are charged that's 19,800 minutes. Now if my plan is 450 minutes and .45 cents overage, that's $8700 is posisble overages. $400 isn't even 5% of that amount. So to say that $400 is needed to coverage overages is silly. Talking just 62 minutes a day( durring peak times ) would not only use up all my minutes but use more than $400 in overages. |

| Since when did logic/sensibility/silly ever affect a company like Verizon's decision making process?
I'm only predicting what I think they will do. |
