Re: iphone appstore speedtest

Is the crash repeatable (at work)

Yes. It crashes for me about 50-75% of the time. I have an original iPhone, running the latest software.

Ok thanks, Is there a way to reproduce reliably from a rebooted phone. Such as: run it twice, or something?

if you could - see if it only happens when you pick download or only upload. Eg, try first using the app in the most minimal way to see if it is stable, like just select server or whatever. Then if it is stable, add some more function, until perhaps you can identify one standard function that isn't stable. Or maybe it is just random.

sorry if this is a hassle but I doubt the dev has a 2g iphone he can test crashes on, although I'm asking him about crash dumps.

Well, I rebooted the phone, and I've run a speed test 3 or 4 times on WiFi and now am doing EDGE speed tests, and it hasn't crashed yet.

I know the crashes are stored somewhere, I remember iTunes asking me if I wanted to upload that data once. I just assume it does it every time now.

So aftger running a bunch of tests, I just let the phone go to sleep in the app. Then I came back and ran another test and Kablooey, it crashed, right towards the end. It seems like it's able to record the result in the history list before it crashes, if that's any help.

I found a way to repeatably crash the app for me. When I go to run the test and just choose Latency and let it run its course. When I click the Cancel button it just sends me back to the Springboard. I tried this using WiFi and 3G and also restarted the phone to no avail.

I just installed and tested the new version a little bit (version 1.08 by the way). My latency actually seems down since I last ran a test.

I'm happy to see that iPod Touch users don't have to say they're using WiFi anymore.

Re: iphone appstore speedtest

I seem to be having serious issues with the accuracy of this app.

When performing the speed test in "All" mode, it reports GPRS as being faster than 3G!

When using 3G in "All" mode it is consistently reporting the download speed as 118Kb/s (approx) and upload speed of 60Kb/s, meanwhile it is reporting GPRS as a download speed of 300Kb/s and upload of 9Kbit/sec.

This is clearly bogus as GPRS can't achieve anywhere near 300Kbit/sec, 30-40Kb/sec is all you could expect on GPRS.

From watching the screen it seems that the download sessions are aborted early when testing GPRS (network issues perhaps ?) but the app is then assuming that the download is complete and calculating the speed based on that with no regard for the fact that less than 1/10 of the download actually completed - a bug.

Also when testing 3G I consistently get 118Kbit down, 60Kbit up in "ALL" mode, even though I know my connection is faster than that. If I do the "Download" only test the speed averages around 860Kb/sec - with peaks as high as 1.7Mbit/sec.

Clearly something wrong here as well with the very low reported speed in "All" mode.

Any ideas anyone ? Great app, but very inaccurate, and I have yet to find an iPhone speed test app that is not wildly inaccurate :-(

Regards

First off, selecting GPRS probably has a very small sample size, otherwise it would take forever.

Second, are you testing it on an actual GPRS connection?

we're releasing the second version in days, we'll take a look at what happens under gprs ..

First, are you actually _on_ 3g or gprs when "selecting" 3g or gprs as a test? or always on gprs?

But if you watch the test in progress, it should not "abort" and if it does, it should not go on to report a speed so if that is happening it can be fixed however that begs the question of why your network is behaving that way?

Anyway -- as far as I know, whether you select 3g or gprs or wifi nothing should actually change with the test itself. It will still try to increasing downloads and uploads until a decent time is taken then calculate the speed from that (the largest completed operation). So I would not expect the test to "consistently" do something different when you select gprs vs 3g vs wifi ..

for what it's worth, its been very consistant and reliable for me, mainly testing 3g and wifi.

By the way .. in case it isn't clear, you are not able to select what your transport is by the question 3g/gprs etc.. you are informing the app what you are currently connected as, that is all.

Sorry if that isn't clear and is the source of the confusion.

Apart from that, the developer is going to make sure that we don't mis-time and report speeds if there are any aborted downloads.

Hi,

Yes of course I'm testing it on an actual GPRS connection.

Here we have no EDGE coverage, there is only 3G and GPRS, so if I switch off 3G on the phone itself I am definitely getting GPRS. (Round circle icon)

I understand that the GPRS test would have a smaller sample size, but from watching the test it does not seem to be completing the transfers - they are only reaching about 10% of the file size, and the speed reading is approximately 10x higher than what is physically possible with GPRS.

I'm getting a very consitent 300Kb/sec speed report on GPRS when it should be around 30Kb/sec.

I'm still puzzled by why I'm also getting such a different speed result on 3G depending on whether I do All tests together, or the Download test by itself ?

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Hi,

I did some more testing with the phone on a GPRS connection and choosing GPRS in the app, and got the following results for a Download only test:

Trial #1 33Kbits (download stopped at 4%)
Trial #2 179Kbits (download stopped at 3%)
Trial #3 287Kbits (download stopped at 10%)

I tried this a few times and it seems quite consistent.

The test (no matter what you pick) should pick the smallest file first then go up through the sizes until the total time taken is more than 5 seconds. It should do this regardless of what you tell it your connection type currently is.

I don't know why your GPRS connection should fail after 10% .. that sounds like a problem with your network operator. How are you supposed to download a reasonable sized file over GPRS if it does that?

Anyway the developer can see this topic and will make sure the next version doesn't trip up over a failed transfer, at the very least.

Hi,

I don't know why the downloads don't reach 100% on GPRS - I don't have issues with downloading on any other apps with GPRS, only this one, so I would suggest it could be a bug.

Browsing/Email etc downloads are fine without timing out, although naturally they are very slow on GPRS

I'm confused, how do I get this app? What do I have to do to get it?
