Re: Slow Speeds in NYC

I am on Long Island but all day/night yesterday i had constant disconnects/sync issues and weird speeds. Today it finally has become stable here.
Maybe they are doing something in the New York area??

@verizon.net

Same here. The last time I saw a slowdown had to be around 1999 or 2000. Currently I am getting ~850kbps down ~700kbps up on the 3/768 plan. It's been like this for over a week, time of day has no effect. Speeds are still bad even at 4:00 AM I mean, I didn't have a problem being patient for them to roll out the 7.1/768 plan, but this current slowdown has to be the final straw. Spoke to a Cablevision rep today and am awaiting a callback to initiate the switchover process of all of my services!

Re: Slow Speeds in NYC

yeah, same here in Bensonhurst brooklyn

it gets bad every day after 5:30PM so peek hours are as usual bringing down the service. But today has been slow pretty much all day. I'm not going to bother calling their useless support. They know, of course they do. The only thing to do is cancel the service and get something else like the previous poster did.
They either don't care or couldn't care less. one of those two options.

Slow as mollasses. 631 down but the upspeed is normal at 713. I'm on the 3Mbps plan. If this slowdown doesn't get fixed soon I'll sign up with cable till FiOS comes to my neck of the woods.

Bensonhurst here, Brooklyn NY 11204 zip code.

Speeds are in the 600-900kbps range DL around 600-700 upload.
Been like this for the past week, noticed it had gotten severly worst over the weekend with all the rain.

Around 2AM last night though, I reached about 2.0 Mbps. I'm on the 3.0/768 plan. sigh. Can't even load a youtube video smoothly. wtheck is going on?

Heh, so close yet so far away =P. Just ran a test at speedtest.net, getting

No clue what's going on, going to call them soon =P

I'm also in the Bensonhurst 11214 part of Brooklyn and I've never had any slow-downs since I switched over to DSL 2 years ago. I dont know what's going on today but my downstream is at around 700kbps as opposed to the 2900kbps as always.

Anyone have any ideas as to what's causing this?

So far it looks like mostly Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge and parts of Long Island. Let's hope a fix is in the works.

Re: Slow Speeds in NYC

Just called Verizon up, they ran several line tests, saying things are all green, that I should be receiving 3.3Mbps DL. [Not the case on my end =P]

The guy thinks it's my out of date router; might be acting up. [Have 1st or 2nd edition white westell modem :P lol] Thing has been good for over 5 years+

Anyways, had them check out my friend's phone line, 13th ave area, saying he's good also, but we're both getting around 600-700 kbps. Meh.

That is odd we are though serviced out of same CO in 11214? 71street 16th AVE? It may be your router actually. Because if we are in the same area. We should be having same localized problems. Maybe my logic is flawed here. Something else is going on for you(s).

Those that have issue state clearly zip codes. Because i'm thinking "in general" it may be 11204 Bensonhurst. Which not sure uses same CO.

Re: Slow Speeds in NYC

I'm in the 11213 area. According to this tracert, latency seems to shoot up at the 4th hop. Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't see any pings here over 10ms throughout the entire trace. Maybe something is related:

Tracing route to nyc.speakeasy.net [216.254.95.2]

As of right now, my speeds are actually normal again. Seems like this is just a good old fashioned case of peak hour saturation.

Re: Slow Speeds in NYC

it's the peek hour thing. The last time (few months ago) it took 2 weeks to get back. Thanks to the guys at the support forum here actually. But still it's not believable that they don't know and they need us to tell them or the verizon people here telling them as well.
It's not like a single line is down: it's an entire region!

now it's always the same story: I call and somebody from India tells me that everything looks fine (from India maybe). Then I call again and I have to run all the useless tests. Then I post on the support forum and again all the tests. To finally get that they are aware of the problem and they are working on it.

Amateurs act like that. Actually not even amateurs act like that: only Verizon DSL acts like that.

If I do something like that I'd be out of business in no time.

High ping is always related to slow speeds. Since that 4th hop is probably the main backbone for your area, that's your answer to the slow speeds.

Re: Slow Speeds in NYC

The thing is, though, the latency remains exactly the same despite the time of day - that's what's kind of puzzling. The speed, however, fluctuates. Right now I'm testing at 2800/714 with ~65ms to hop #4. Earlier, I was as low as 400/650, still pinging ~65ms to hop #4

Have you guys tried the Verizon Direct forum on this site at all? They might be able to get the attention of some engineers to come out and fix the problem. Be sure to tell the direct people what you've done to try to get this fixed, where the problem is, along with line stats and speed tests/trace routes. Also, for anyone who knows people nearby them having the same issue, mention them.

Hm, didn't know such a forum existed.

Too bad you can't read other people's issues. But from the thread titles, you can see a lot of them already deal with speed issues. Hopefully, after this weekend, they'll start working on this =P

It does exist, yes. The reason why you can't view other's threads is because there may be private information in there that only the Verizon Direct Representative and the topic poster should see.

Re: Slow Speeds in NYC

here we go: 11204 here

it's 5:56PM and it's slow again

it works like a clock: the moment it gets closer to the peek hour then it switches to the slow motion

is Verizon DSL made of a bunch of amateurs or they really know how to do it? ( whatever they're doing)

this post was harsh (I know) : problem is that when you give this kind of service (any kind of service as a matter of fact) don't expect admiration for your paying customers.

I just do not know what is going on. My speed is really ok despite all the issues here. The only issue I had was the flash applet with my antivirus dragging things down. But here is my result today again. It goes between 277x and 28xx and sometimes 2900. Im in the same neighboring approximately with at least some of you.

Hello,

I'm in the same area and this has been happening to me for months, I've the 3/768 package. Right now it's like paying $33 for a 768/128 package or actually dial-up.

I'd contacted the Verizon Direct Forums and they said everything is fine on their end. They'd sent a dispatch over to my home couple of weeks ago, the tech said I'd need to replace the line outside my home for $200.

Funny thing is the speed are back to normal after midnight but by then I've to go to bed for work. I'm thinking of switching over to optimum online; but I'd heard from a couple friends that for cable, the line is shared among other neighbors. Plus they can raise the monthly bill for no reason. Is this true?

I'm having the same problem here at 11223, Bensonhurst. I think we should start find who's the top Officials and let them know that this issue needs to resolve asap. I have had this problem for the past 2 Months. I called and they said their wasn't a problem and also posted in Verizon Direct forums. They closed my ticket saying everything is fine. I know it's fine during the day but during the nights, it is extremely slow.

same here: the funny thing (but I'm not laughing) is that every time I have to repeat all the useless tests to end up with the same useless response.

but you're right: THEY KNOW! of course they know.. if they don't know then they'd be selling something else. Problem is that they don't care or don't want to spend to fix anything. Alternatives? cable. what DSL alternative we have?

Yeah, alternatives there are but it's just too much of a hassle. It's really annoying how it's only during the evenings for this choke up. 5PM-2AM. At least that's the case for me.

I've been having the same problem for the past couple of days now. My Upload speeds are faster than my Down and I'm in 11224. I did not bother calling Verizon to report the problem, i already know their answer. Hopefully they'll fix whatever needs to be fixed soon...

I'm also in 11224. I was wondering if I was the only one with this problem, I guess not. My upload speeds were consistently around 350 kbps while my downloads were around 250 and below. It's been like this for nearly a month already. I had a tech come over but other than telling me that my bitrate was low he didn't fix anything.

I'm in 11214 and speed is ok, I'm starting to get a feeling. This is a paid advertisement by "Optimum Online." I'm not officially accusing, just feels strange. I would not be lying that speed is my true results. If it was slow I would be complaining too. But your in 11214 and having issues, while i'm not. Unless we have something radically different this is odd. I'm not covering for Verizon. Customer just like you so something must be on your end. Because i'm not magically getting better speeds. For this to be on the isp's end I would suffer too. As we are nearly connected to the same equipment. Unless other possibility (outside of many) might be cards going bad. Re: Slow Speeds in NYC

I'm sorry, but it's ridiculous that you should even make a post like that. We are loyal customers who have problems with our service. I have had DSL since 1999. The problems are not on our end. It is very possible that you are in 11214 but maybe somehow served out of a different CO which is not affected, or your routing is different or something along those lines. Heck, I am in 11213 and I was experiencing the problem too.

Luckily, they have resolved it for me, but many other users are still having the problem. Even suggesting that the complaints may have been fabricated is downright disrespectful and inappropriate considering that a lot of loyal, paying customers are suffering through this ordeal. If you are not or have not been experiencing the problem, then there really is no reason to post in this thread anyway; particularly posting the same thing over and over - that your speeds are great. We understand that your speeds may be fine, but our speeds are / were not fine. There is no need to repeatedly make the point. I really don't mean to come off as rude, just stating my opinion and speaking up for others who may still be going through this.

Ok, i'm content that you see the bright side of things. If you can see that, my post is done. I have been thinking it is possible. That the first routing point your going through. Might be the culprit of your problem. Ip's have been changed to protect.

Hello,

I'haven't been online these past few days, just can't stand waiting 5-10 mins for a webpage to load.

Is there anyway to get this reolved? Maybe sticky this thread on verizon direct forums and hope the techs will take notice.

Thanks.

@verizon.net

In past two weeks or so, my dsl speed have dropped from around 3mb/sec to sub 500kb/sec. However, my upload speed stayed the same at 700-815kb/sec. I've tried to call Verizon dsl support got bunch of Indian guys telling me it is my computer or my phone line. However, they cannot answer why my upload speed didn't drop like my download speed. Anyway, I give up on talking to them. They have no idea what they are reading. One guy told me that I have serious OS issue and should try a new network card and remove then reinstall TCP/IP. hehe I finally couldn't take it anymore and told me that I'm MCSE/CNE, so I should know if I'm having OS problem. That made the guy go quiet then transfered me to a woman support who asked me to do modem power off again. sigh....

Anyway, I live in Midwood Brooklyn 11232. Not sure what is Verizon doing but they really need to fix this.
