Sudden slow speeds. Need Assistance

I have Covad DSL through Earthlink. I would like someone from Covad to checkout my connection to see if there is any line issues that have cropped up over the last 2 weeks. My line speed has dropped from 2.500mps to 1.500mps and 950mps (DSLReports speed tests). This line has worked for over 8 years with almost no problems. I'd contact Earthlink but they are useless for troubleshooting.

thanks,

Although I can't look at your line, (You may want to post in the Covad direct forum) I do have a question.

I've seen this type of comment here before, and I don't understand why a user, such as yourself, would keep, and pay for an ISP, when by your own quote, they are useless for support issues.

I'm just trying to understand the consumers thought process on this, as to me, an ISP owner, it makes no sense.

Modem would not respond to telnet connection. I tried with normal LAN and crossover lan cables connected directly to my PC.
What IP did you have for your PC at the time you tried to connect?

Did you also fill in the Subnet Mask plus the Default Gateway values and what did you use?

The ZyXEL P645M-11 uses a crossover cable which is supplied in the EL Modem box.

If you used an XP or Vista PC did you disable the built in Firewall to allow Telnet to work?

If your Motherboard has a Nforce chipset, did you disable its Firewall to open up Telnet access?

I used the cross over cable. I ran the Windows hyper terminal software and entered the address 192.168.1.1, but was not asked for the subnet mask or gateway. I did not disable the Tiny firewall software. I got Earthlink to open a trouble ticket with Covad. I hope that they can get to the bottom of this. Thanks for your assistance.

Are you sure you have the P645M-11 Bridge Modem and not the P645-UHP Modem? What does it say on the Label on the bottom of the ZyXEL Modem?

ZyXEL ADSL Modem Label Example

Now if the label shows Prestige 645 - UHP then forget Telnet and follow the steps here:

»EarthLink DSL FAQ »How to Get to the Logs, the Diagnostics Page, and the DSL Statistics Page - UHP

If it says Prestige 645M Bridge Modem then you use Telnet.

Telnet is a Window Application reachable by typing "Telnet 192.168.1.1" in a Run Box minus the quotes of course.

Start Run Dialog

Telnet Command

You must be disconnected from the Internet with no PPPoE software active (the phone cord connected, but no PPP Software running) and with a direct Ethernet connection to the ZyXEL ADSL Modem from the PC with no Router in between.

You set your PC to a Static IP of 192.168.1.10, subnet 255.255.0.0. and Gateway of 192.168.1.1 and click OK until changes are saved. Password is "mspgzyx" minus the quotes as seen in this FAQ. All software firewalls must be disabled or off.

Here are others that have used telnet successfully.

»Re: ZyXel 645
quote:
Go to Menu 24.8 ("Command Interpreter Mode"). Here's the commands to completely snapshot your connection:

w a l n (short for "wan adsl linedata near")
w a l f (short for "wan adsl linedata far")
w a c (short for "wan adsl chandata")
w a p (short for "wan adsl perfdata")

The password "mspzyx" may have been short-lived as is access via telnet.

Upgrading firmware has risk (there's no easily available serial port to fall back on, you better know your settings, Earthlink no longer supports the modem, etc.) There's also a few ways to do it - Menu 24.7.1 is a key.

Having been thru it, I'd liken it to the battered wife syndrome.

The service works long enough for a trouble ticket to expire and then it goes flakey and you have to start all over again.

Or, it comes back before you get thru to level 3 and all they do is keep asking is it working now yournamehere. What lights are on your modem younamehere. do you have a TV within 3' of the modem yournamehere. Is there anything else I can help you with yournamehere.

Or, you get through to level 3 and their computers are down.

Or, it goes down the next day, you get to L3 but the service is back up and they can't access their logs from the day before.

When you finally nail all the conditions and the engineer is on the phone, they put you on hold, change your service to 6MB when your line can only support 3MB, get back on and say they found the problem and reset it to 3mb.

Rinse and repeat.

All those happened to me.

The other part of it is EL used to be good. Then they outsourced everything. Back in the day, dial-up was what everyone used and it was a day when email addresses were only with your ISP. When you've had an email address with an ISP for 9 years as your login and contact email to a bazillion websites, it's a daunting task to switch.

Basically, for those who've been with EL since circa 1999, you can't understand them in terms of the way things are today where there's plenty of ways to shield your dependency on ISP. In other cases there's little to no competition thus no choice. FYI
