devicemanage : It's a different kind of set up. Nothing like a vpn connection to reach shares and an exchange server remotely. We have an application the we originally deployed with a point to point circuit. We have recently pulled these circuits and implemented the vpn connection. Our app connects to a main frame via sna protocol. But rather than have 500+ users connecting to the main frame we deployed a host intergration server (msft product). This server authenticates the users and then it does the communication with the server in a first in first out basis. There is actually 4 of these server. Either way this is what happens.

User connects to the vpn. Then runs our application, this runs thru the vpn to the host intergration server. This server checks the terminal number and allows communication to our mainframe. Informtion is sent and received.

These servers are in a work group network. Not sure if all that points to anything but the funny thing is - we are a wins shop, back in the day the owner decided that we should have 2 wins servers. Well eventually there were 500+ workstation out there with wins configurations on them so we had to keep it going. So the workstations could very well have wins setting on their nic cards still and I am pretty sure that they can not get to the wins servers from the vpn.
--
»www.devicemanager.net

a4nic8er : I have seen a very similar problem on a small office network (workgroup not domain) using 192.168.x.x fixed IP addresses, which (I think I remember) I rectified by using the *nix box (samba server) as a WINS server for the Windows machines. No VPN at all involved in that case.

I do not know if this will help you as there are quite a few variables which may be very different in your case. You may be running a domain controller (if that alters anything), and/or maybe the issue is with your master browser being outside the VPN (or that it is inside and there is another master browser argument going on outside the VPN).

*edit
»support.microsoft.com/kb/188001

devicemanage : We are currently running a cisco vpn client to our pix 515e - we have split tunneling enabled. Occasionally certain users will lose internet when connected to the vpn. Sometimes the connect and everyting is perfect. At times the connection takes a long time to connect when usually it is almost instant. Rebooting the computer sometimes corrects this and other time rebooting the cable/dsl modem. Has anyone seen this before?
--
»www.devicemanager.net
