The ZyXEL P645M-11 uses a crossover cable which is supplied in the EL Modem box.
If you used an XP or Vista PC did you disable the built in Firewall to allow Telnet to work?
If your Motherboard has a Nforce chipset, did you disable its Firewall to open up Telnet access? -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

| I used the cross over cable. I ran the Windows hyper terminal software and entered the address 192.168.1.1, but was not asked for the subnet mask or gateway. I did not disable the Tiny firewall software. I got Earthlink to open a trouble ticket with Covad. I hope that they can get to the bottom of this. Thanks for your assistance. |

 ZyXEL ADSL Modem Label Example
Now if the label shows Prestige 645 - UHP then forget Telnet and follow the steps here:
»EarthLink DSL FAQ »How to Get to the Logs, the Diagnostics Page, and the DSL Statistics Page - UHP
If it says Prestige 645M Bridge Modem then you use Telnet.
Telnet is a Window Application reachable by typing "Telnet 192.168.1.1" in a Run Box minus the quotes of course.
 Start Run Dialog
 Telnet Command
You must be disconnected from the Internet with no PPPoE software active (the phone cord connected, but no PPP Software running) and with a direct Ethernet connection to the ZyXEL ADSL Modem from the PC with no Router in between.
You set your PC to a Static IP of 192.168.1.10, subnet 255.255.0.0. and Gateway of 192.168.1.1 and click OK until changes are saved. Password is "mspgzyx" minus the quotes as seen in this FAQ. All software firewalls must be disabled or off.
Here are others that have used telnet successfully.

»Re: ZyXel 645 quote: Go to Menu 24.8 ("Command Interpreter Mode"). Here's the commands to completely snapshot your connection:
w a l n (short for "wan adsl linedata near") w a l f (short for "wan adsl linedata far") w a c (short for "wan adsl chandata") w a p (short for "wan adsl perfdata")
The password "mspzyx" may have been short-lived as is access via telnet.
Upgrading firmware has risk (there's no easily available serial port to fall back on, you better know your settings, Earthlink no longer supports the modem, etc.) There's also a few ways to do it - Menu 24.7.1 is a key. [text was edited by author 2003-04-18 06:56:48]
