Unlocking Bell 2Wire modems....

Changed my post to summarize everything.
Hope this helps those who dare to try it ;)

I would appreciate any comments on my Line Stats as I'm not too sure how to read it.

Summary

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
FLASHING CAN PERMENANTLY BRICK YOUR MODEM.
I ONLY DID THIS ONCE & CAN ONLY CONFIRM THIS WORKS WITH MY MODEM.

RENTED BELL MODEMS ARE BELL PROPERTY.
YOU MAY GET CHARGED FEES FOR MESSING WITH IT.

How to Unlock a BELL 2Wire Modem (ONLY Model 2701HG-G):
-> Bought (Not Rented) a Bell Modem from a guy
-> MDC was password protected
-> Could not visit Websites. Kept getting Bell Registration Webpage
-> Changing DNS settings on Computer or on Modem did not work
-> See my initial thread for more info: »Got screwed with 2wire modem. What now?

Solution
-> Flashed modem with a Different Firmware
-> Flashed using this link: »gateway.2wire.net/tech/upgrade.html
-> No password is needed to Flash
-> »gateway.2wire.net can be replaced with the modem IP Address 192.168.1.254 or whatever it may be
-> Firmware. See this thread (2nd Post): »www.the-scream.co.uk/forums/show···st222693
-> MDC password will be "2wire".
-> NOTE: There is no longer an option for "Application Settings" in this firmware.
It MAY be possible to get it back though. See the Firmware info below.

Firmware Info:
-> Singtel Branded Firmware (NOT Generic 2wire)

Just FYI, the firmware is nothing big.

From what I can see it's been around for a bit.
It's actually called the 2700HGV Recovery firmware.

The logo that comes up now is "SingTel".

Hi,

I didn't suspect there was so much to read
about this product!!! Is it available thru my
local electronics store or must i go to eBay?

It's most likely another ISP's firmware. The ultimate find would be the generic 2Wire firmware but as far as I know that's not available outside of the company.

Most obvious is the logo on the web interface, if it shows the 2Wire or blank then most likely it is not ISP branded but I am uncertain whether it is always customized for the ISP. Second thing which I think would probably verify almost 100% is in the MDC under Components, on mine it shows the following:

DSL Modem: 7.1.9
system: 61861
base_ui: 61862
common_en: 61864
base_voice: 61863
sbc_config: 61898
sbc_logo: 61899
sbc_en: 61900
sbc: 61901
sbc_providerconf: 61902
Firewall Rules: 1000
Application List: 1001
IGMP Proxy: Disabled
IGMP Snooping: Enabled

It should not show SBC or any provider. Take a screenshot if you can.

Careful with the firmware, I believe the Bell version is a 2701 which is why it bricked the modem.

NOPE IT's NOT SOUND. Just want everyone reading this thread to know that.

BUT it did work for me. I'm not with Bell and I got screwed buying this modem because it kept asking for Bell Registration.

So it was an okay risk for me.

At first I thought it was Generic. After all the name of it is "2wire_reinstall_voice_5.29.117.3.2sp" but after install, the "Singtel" logo is showing on the interface.

There's a lot to read IF you want to choose another route.
Otherwise it's just a matter of flashing it.

No it's not available at any local electronics store.
eBay & Craigslist are the usual spots.
BUYER BEWARE though of scammers at both sites.

Just note 2 things:
1) I can only vouch for my model: Bell 2701HG-G
2) I tried this firmware & nothing else: 2wire_reinstall_voice_5.29.117.3.2sp

Here's some info from what I believe is a generic 2wire:

Also the detailed log will show if the 2wire is customized for a provider, messages during bootup will have the info:

INF P0000-00-00T00:00:34 pkg: extracted ui/base_ui
INF P0000-00-00T00:00:34 pkg: extracted provider/2wire
INF P0000-00-00T00:00:34 pkg: note: provider/2wire has no uninstall script
INF P0000-00-00T00:00:36 pkg: extracted lang/2wire_es

Just out of curiosity, where did you obtain that modem?

where would one obtain the files .... how would the upgrade take place if i don't have access to the mdc ...

I want to do this on a telus 2wire for which i don't have access to the mdc and the modem is useless at the moment since i can't configure it for pppoe (telus doesn't use pppoe).

I don't know where you would get the file, this image may help if you get one.
