From what I can see it's been around for a bit. It's actually called the 2700HGV Recovery firmware.
The logo that comes up now is "SingTel".

No it's not available at any local electronics store. eBay & Craigslist are the usual spots. BUYER BEWARE though of scammers at both sites.
Just note 2 things: 1) I can only vouch for my model: Bell 2701HG-G 2) I tried this firmware & nothing else: 2wire_reinstall_voice_5.29.117.3.2sp

Most obvious is the logo on the web interface, if it shows the 2Wire or blank then most likely it is not ISP branded but I am uncertain whether it is always customized for the ISP. Second thing which I think would probably verify almost 100% is in the MDC under Components, on mine it shows the following:
It should not show SBC or any provider. Take a screenshot if you can.

This sound? NOPE IT's NOT SOUND. Just want everyone reading this thread to know that.
BUT it did work for me. I'm not with Bell and I got screwed buying this modem because it kept asking for Bell Registration.
So it was an okay risk for me.

I haven't specifically checked the 2wire logs though for any messages.
said by nicomaniaque :Edit: i got a bricked 2 wire... what i can do with this? As far as I know, there is nothing you can do. Though I've "heard" that you can try contacting 2wire themselves and see if they will help.
said by wayjac :The bell 2701HG-G is a up to date adsl modem If your "old Alcatel" was a alcatel 1000 or speedtouch home/pro the 2wire just does a better job of maintaining adsl sync. One thing the 2wire does that the alcatel didn't is recognize that it can sync to a higher rate after it has trained down. Cool thanks for the info!

That said, this is NOT a rented modem.
Bought it off of Craigslist and the dude never returned my numerous calls or emails when I realized it was locked down by Bell.
On that note, I figure I can do whatever I want with it.

| I got TekSavvy dry DSL. The Bell technician was here today. After he did his thing, the line was not up. Befre I get a chance to call TekSavvy to see why (it turned out it was not activated yet), he went ahead and gave me this 2Wire 2701HG-G for free!
Now I guess to make use of it, I will have to unlock it. I will test it once I get the line up first. But had a question:
Did you guys figure out how the original firmware can be backed up?
Also, after I flash it, should I use it for an MLPPP strategy?

| Hey,
I have Tek Savvy Internet, too, I purchased a Bell 2Wire modem 2701HG-G modem aswell.. I was wondering when you flashed it.. what setup-keycode did you use? Because I read the page and they said for extra features you can use different keycode, such as content filtering, and parental controls and many others.
apparently: "5225-2374-WG62-22AS-BJ7P" will give you 'Internet Access Controls', 'Content Screening' and 'Firewall Monitor'
"528Y-27G4-A222-22BJ-B22V" will just give you only 'Firewall Monitor'
The reference can be found at:»bt2700hgv.tripod.com/ir1002700HG···29.117.3
any help would be appreciated.

I read lots of posts regarding people wanting to use the 2701 in bridge mode, and some other posts stating that trying to use it in PPPoE is not really working...it would add @singtel.com after the username. Is that true?
