| Very broad, need answers to help me decide to go with teksav Hi this may seem like a Bell post but it isn't I just started off with a little bit of history. I know that I should post in the teksavvy direct forum but I chose to do it here as I would like the opinions of everyone, including teksavvy tech's. Thanks in advance.
I'm an existing bell customer. I'm on the old HSE 5 Mbps unlimited plan, paying $50.51 with tax. Bell has notified me that on October 4th (start of my billing cycle) there will be an additional charge of $5/month for the unlimited plan. This really woke me up. I guess this is there way of phasing out the unlimited plan by scaring customers with an increase in price. I checked my monthly bandwidth usage and I average about 180Gigs (up and down). I have cancelled my service for Oct. 3rd (got my cancellation number/confirmation number) as the teksavvy $29.95 premium with 200Gigs/month sounds very good. I'm actually surprised that I didn't do this a long time ago; guess I'm too lazy.
After this past harsh winter that we had I was having problems with my lines; my (phone) connections were getting crossed (to the point where the police came to my place reporting that I dialed 911), a dramatic loss in speed and constant disconnects. I got on the bell direct forums and they took care of the problem within a week (they had to wait for the snow to melt; I saw them working outside). The tech told me that he has now put me on a remote CO about 2.5 Km away from my condo. So I checked my speed at speedtest.net and was getting 4371/645 with a ping of 45ms. I was happy with this and this was at the end of March. Now when I check my speed it's 4658/418 with a ping of 175ms; which is not that good since I do a lot of online console gaming. I called Bell earlier on today and asked if I could be put on Fast path instead of Interleave and they told me that I would be sacraficing speed (down to about 3Mbps) and I might get frequent disconnects. Now I don't want this either since I use torrents as well (I guess i'm a heavy user ie online gaming and torrents). Seeing that I have already cancelled my service for the 3rd of October I told him to leave it on interleave.
So my question is will I face this same problem with teksavvy since teksavvy uses Bell's line's?
Another question, is Bell also throttling online gaming ports? I ask this because I notice on Xbox live and the PS3 i'm constantly lagging. In addition to this I ran a couple of speed test in PS3 using first a NAT 1 setup, then a NAT 2 setup (wired) and was getting speeds of about 2654/414 with a ping of 183. I did the same test on my PC (minutes apart using NAT 1 and NAT 2) and got speeds of about 4658/414 pinging 175ms. I have looked around on PS3 forums and people are having the same problem down south with Comcast and Time Warner etc. They say that it is a problem with the ISP or the modem. Some people are saying that it is a problem with the PS3's built in browser. But I think it's the ISP and throttling because I saw some of the posted speeds of different ISP'S and there speeds match that of the PC. So are any teksavvy/Bell users with PS3's facing this problem?
I know that this seems like a very long and a non teksavvy post but the answers to these questions will help me decide to go with teksavvy or not. Upon reading reviews and browsing the teksavvy website I really like teksavvy so far.
PS modem: Speedstream 4200 and router is Linksys WRT54GL.
and I would greatly appreciate a prompt response as Oct 3rd is coming up fast (I don't want to face any internet downtime between switching).

It all depends...
Teksavvy will work hard with you to ensure your line is at it's peak.
The speed issues you are talking about could be a few things.
If the area node is congested, then yes... no matter what provider you have, this will be an issue. It can be fixed, you just may have to push Bell to do this.
I find that Teksavvy has more push as most bell customers only have overseas call center's to deal with which will fight you on issues like that.
Teksavvy only uses the END user network. So If the congestion is past the local end, you will not experience this issue.
The bottom line is should you have any issues, They are very easy to work with and through you can push Bell to fix issues on the end user network.
Unlike what Bell would like everyone to believe, 3rd party ISP's like Teksavvy only share the end user network. The network to the internet, is handled and managed 100% by Teksavvy. | |

| Re: Very broad, need answers to help me decide to go with teksav Dude I'd just order Teksavvy now and deal with any issues as they arise. which I am sure their will be ie bell messing around, changing ur remote/co etc. btw are you able to extract the line stats from that modem. I hear it can be a bit of a chore but it will help things too. Keep in mind are you renting this modem? Cause you may have to give this back to them. But it's good you have a Linksys GL already as theirs ways around bells throttle using it with Teksavvy.

| You need to check your line stats. You said that bell told you your line is not good for a fastpath profile, they could be right. If your line isn't good enough for a 5m fastpath profile, switching to Teksavvy isn't going to make any difference. Maybe its time to look at cable. | |

I tried to use the DMT tool and it wouldn't work (yes I got the correct version for the SS4200 and wired the modem straight to the computer). It said that it didn't recognize the modem. I even asked Bell if they could e-mail me my line stats and that option didn't fly as well.
I am still hoping that a teksavvy tech can reply to this post, or should I also post this in the direct forum?
Anyone have answers to the online gaming ports question I had in my original post? | |

Teksavvy basically provides the same service that Bell does, but only for the last mile, afterwards we fall on our own network.
If you want to place an order we can place it on the 3rd of October so as to try to minimize the "down" time. We suggest providing the cancellation # but it isn't necessary.
As far as we & the community know, P2P are the only applications throttled although some have mentioned that other applications have been throttled like VPN, FTP & anything that might use a secured connection. I have yet to hear that Console games have been throttled other then ports not being opened properly. If you have done your port forwarding properly on your router then all should be working. If you need help for that I suggest you visit : »portforward.com/
For your line stats, DMT will not work on a SpeedStream modem if you don't use DMT v9.01 : found here : »dmt.mhilfe.de/ Make sure you are connected directly in the modem & not through your router. If all else fails & you want your line stats, I would suggest asking the likes of "Bell Sylvain" in the Direct Forum of Bell to get a screen shot of your current line stats.
If you are with Teksavvy we can do the same as well as to give you a screen shot of your stats. I would strongly suggest you post in the Direct Forum

I have the cancellation # and the date. That's not a problem.
As far as port forwarding goes I don't think it's the problem as I stated earlier that I did the speed test and have played online using both, modem-->console and modem-->router-->console.
I am using DMT v9.01 and while I try to get the line stats I have the modem connected to the PC. But it just didn't work. Am I doing something wrong, should I leave the modem in bridge status or go for the router status?
