Can't Transfer Domain with 8 Day Till Expiration

I thought we had until 7 days before expiration to transfer a domain name to a new registrar.
So I have a domain that expires Oct 2, and it is Sept 24 today. That's 8 days' difference, but when I attempted the transfer this morning, the new registrar's system produced a message saying that the domain was already expired or less than 7 days to expiration.
Just what kind of math are they using to count the days to expiration?

Maybe it's business days.

Who's the registrar?

Good point. Old registrar is DirectNIC. New one is NameCheap.

Depending on how they count (close of business on the 7th, midnight starting the 7th, 11:59 on the 7th) and whether they queue orders for submission (the following day), it could be less than 7 days.

I'd play it safe, renew with your current registrar. You'll have to wait 60 days but you can then transfer out to your new registrar. When you transfer your time should extend (so you'd have a year and 10 months left). Some registrars have an extra grace period but probably not to let you transfer it away from them...
