I'd play it safe, renew with your current registrar. You'll have to wait 60 days but you can then transfer out to your new registrar. When you transfer your time should extend (so you'd have a year and 10 months left). So I have a domain that expires Oct 2, and it is Sept 24 today. That's 8 days' difference, but when I attempted the transfer this morning, the new registrar's system produced a message saying that the domain was already expired or less than 7 days to expiration.
