inetspec : If you live in an older area, you could ask if your drop needs to be replaced.

If it is aerial (pole to house), it can be done relatively quickly depending upon workload. If it a buried line, this usually gets sent to a contractor to be replaced, could take up to a month depending upon their workload.

The good news is, that if this is the problem, you likely won't experience further signal issues local to your house. I had this done at a place that was built in the 70s. It was buried, so the contractor ripped it up and replaced it. Coax cable that old can have many issues. After this was corrected, I never experienced a signal related problem again.

AnonShawUser : Random caps are random. And annoying.

What we can try to guarantee is the speeds inside the network (thus, at speedtest.shaw.ca ) what we can't guarantee are routing and speeds outside the network. But, we can try to see what's going on. It sounds like you may have been hit by some overflow techs when calling in. If there's even any non-overflow from where you're calling to.

What we also try here in Calgary, is running additional speedtests from speedtest.net. Try a few servers on there, so you can actually see if there's line congestion to just one location, or if it's all outbound. Do a bunch of tests when you're noticing slow speeds, and try to be connected directly to the modem so they can't just rule it out as a bad router issue.

Call in, get the tech you speak to to make a trouble ticket and get the ticket number. When you get slow speeds and run speedtests, fire off an email to internet.help@sjrb.ca with the speedtest results AND the trouble ticket number so they can monitor it as it progresses, as examples.

If, however, your speeds are sitting around the high range and you're complaining about only getting 4.5mbps out of 5mbps possible, they'll shrug it off, append the ticket, and give you a boilerplate(if that).

Just for kicks, I tried running some of the speedtests off here, and I couldn't get above 2mbps down. Speedtest.net gave me 14mbps down and 1mbps up to Seattle. The Shaw speedtest gave me 23mbps down. So, really, try other locations, other sites, and other servers to get a better view of your speeds.

natureone : :uhh: Well let me start off with saying Hello everyone and in hopes someone here just might have a clue about could be the problem after I explain , So Here goes!

Well where to start , This seems to be an on going issue for me we have had Shaw High Speed Internet for about 3 months now , from day one it took Shaw almost 26 hours to Provision the modem why it took so long I am not sure , from then we had issues with speeds so they send out a Tech from Shaw to come see what the issue was.

Well he did not test the lines he just simply replaced the modem and says " Well That Should Fix the Problem "

So I am at the time very Excited as I see awesome fast speeds again!!! .. So as time goes on We had to make a few more calls to Shaw Tech Support with the same issues , They have tried to see if they can see were the issue is why we are getting slow speeds and random pauses in downloads / on line Gaming and why it takes 3 - 15 second stalls.

so they send out another tech to my home and I watch him test the line from with in my home and says levels are a little high so he puts on a filter on the end of my line and connects it back to the modem.

Well guess what still the same problems , Oh can not for get this problem seems to be getting alot worse as the days passes , Anyhow .. So I suggest for him to change the modem again ( 3rd time now ) and he had to call it in to make sure as he said " was allowed " ... He comes back about 7 - 10 mins later with a new modem and changes it out ... he gets me to test with " shaw speed test " uggggg hate that Test lol ... And shows yes I am doing very well now.

What I dont get is I use the speed test and line test from this website and they would not even look at it as they say " We dont know the the site we dont use it " ....... Sooooooooooo He leaves as he has to put in another Internet / Cable service for another person ( Family Member ) in the Building I am in.

Guess what .... I test out her Internet and wow she has no issues nothing wrong working perfect and she only lives in the floor below me!!!!

So I decide I am going to call another family member who is and has been working with stuff like this for many many years , he tells me they should check the box OUTSIDE my home and says there maybe some corrosion on the ends that could cause this and has seen this happen many times.

I should stop rambling on here , below I will link all the testing I have done.

If anyone thinks they might has some solution please it would be great! as I have yet another tech! Coming tomorrow ( September 25th 2008 ) and I want to make sure I will not miss something that he should or could be doing as I am the only one in this building who has issues!!!

All the test's I have done can be viewed here -

»/testhistory/1583023/51bad

and the test I did from the other familys home just below me -

»/linequality/nil/2434733
