[help] Lines running across the top of TV and Computer moniter

I have the oddest problem and it is driving me crazy...I am hoping there is a way to fix it...

I have faint white lines running horizontally across the tip of the TV screen...I have the same thing happening with my computer monitor...being a triple play customer, it doesn't take a genius to figure out, that it has something to do with OOL...I assume it has to do with the digital connection, because it only happens on the main TV, the one with the digital box....and since it does not happen on every channel, I am wondering if there is a fix to this...

most of the time, it doesn't bother me, since the lines are faint and sort of blend in...but sometimes, I can get a three inch row of lines very close together and it causes the top of the screen to be distorted.

Is there something I can do?

Re: [help] Lines running across the top of TV and Computer monit

You are comparing the video output of your TV to that of your PC monitor? OOL is not the problem then. It is most likely a power issue I think. A faulty cable modem connection will not cause a problem on your PC monitor. It may cause an issue with your TV display but not both. Like I said, sounds like a power issue.

Hi Lauri,

If you plug in say a DVD or a video game, do the lines disappear from your TV?

You also mentioned lines on your monitor. One and the other really have nothing to do with each other, unless it is some sort of weird power problem.

If you completely disconnect your cable modem from your PC or router, do you still get the lines on your PC monitor?

In other words, if you completely disconnect all of CV's equipment, does the problem go away?

Lastly, could you describe your physical wiring (here's an example)

said by Example :
--->DROP (or Apt Entrance coax) to a 2 way splitter

from 2 way splitter --> coax line goes to the cable box/tv
from 2 way splitter --> coax line goes to your cable modem

dealing3000 See Profile may be on to something, as I had a similar problem where my home's 110v/60hz feed needed to be conditioned, as the hertz output, which should be 60hz always had a small variance that caused all sorts of problems.

Define power issue...as I am not sure if you mean my specific house or the power lines at the pole...

I wasn't really comparing them...I am far from an expert on how cable and digital lines work, which is why I came in here...To be honest, I know it is an odd problem, and really didn't expect help, but on the off chance this happened to someone else, I had to at least try...

since my house is supplied with power via one line from the pole...it wasn't a far jump to assume there was some kind of problem, especially since I am not the only one in this area to have difficulties...

several neighbors (all Optimum Customers) have complained about many different issues...it is way too long to go into here...

I do know that the lines appeared on both my television and my computer monitor on the same night...since the supplier is one and the same, I just assumed the problem was related...

all I wanted to know is if someone had this problem or could guess at what I could check to fix it...

But, thank you for taking the time to read and answer...I do appreciate it...

we cross posted...sorry

I personally feel it is a power problem, but not mine...C/S says it is me, and I would need to pay for a service call...Since I live in a pretty old home, I would automatically assume it was me...However....

I found out the neighbor across the street were having issues (not the lines I have on the screens, but weak signals, slow connections, etc))..I then started to check with other people on the block and found that all the Optimum Cust have had issues...we all get power from the pole in front of my house...

from 2 way splitter --> coax line goes to your cable modem

LOL..you totally lost me on that...but I think it is close to what I was asking...I was trying to find out how to check where the problem is...

as far as the connection...it is exactly as it was on the day it was installed...no splitters...no moved lines...

Are you describing the lines hidden in older TVs because of overscan?

I am not sure...the TV is 3 years old...is that considered old?

The monitor is about 4 years old...

It doesn't happen all the time on the TV, and not on all channels, and is only pronounced with specific colors...

the monitor is a different story...the lines are almost transparent, so I can see through it, not to mention it is only on the top border...it is just that it creates a mirror image in the upper right corner that is a bit distracting...

the easiest way is to just show you...

The power coming out of that outlet needs to be conditioned. Have an electrician look at the power coming out of your outlets, specifically the one or two feeding your monitor and TV. My $100 is that it is a power conditioning issue. Any electrician should be able to fix it.

It's OK.

When the coaxial cable enters your home or apartment, it is usually split depending on how many televisions are being fed, and usually there's a line for the modem. Occasionally splitters do go bad and can cause poor signal levels, but what you're describing doesn't sound like anything splitter related.

Slow speeds and poor signal levels are a little different than white lines on your screen and monitor. No matter what problems your neighbors are having, lines on your screen and monitor don't sound good... Really...

When you say you have lines on your monitor, are you using any sort of TV-In video card? If not, I would again suggest the following:

Try disconnecting the Cablevision box from your television set, and for good measure, disconnect the modem from your router or PC.

One last question- when you mention lines on your monitor, what were you doing when you saw the lines? Does disconnecting the modem physically help?

(I'm stumped by this, I'm sorry.. It definitely sounds more like a power problem than cable - unless there's some mean ingress going on or something in which case a tech would be needed to sort it out.)

See, if it was only your TV, but TV and Monitor?! I can't really see how a modem (possibly connected to a router) and then to a Network Interface Card would possibly affect the GPU (video card). If anything, your NIC would fry before that would happen, and possibly your entire motherboard.

I just don't see it.. Unless you've got a TV-In card or something..

Make sure the problem isn't with your stuff by disconnecting all of CV's equipment physically from your router/pc AND tv. If the problem goes away, and it's possible to demonstrate that the problem goes away, then OOL should not charge you for a tech visit.

Good luck,
Dave

By the way, what I was asking was for you to describe your cabling layout. Excuse the techie-speak!

It's really not needed because there isn't much people in the forum can do. If this is a legitimate problem, you'll need to get Cablevision out to your place to repair it, but in all the years I've read this forum, your post is unique (which of course doesn't make it any less valid!)

Here's what a splitter looks like. They can be 2 way, 3 way, etc. This is just FYI.

I'm sorry, when I posted I was using a Blackberry and didn't see your messages. This is first and foremost a power issue. Have an electrician take a look at that and other outlets on the same circuit breaker.

I'm wondering if a strong nearby rogue RF source can cause something like this. In any case, me thinks this has nothing to do with Cablevision.

HTH

P.S. 3 years old isn't really that old for a TV set. I have a 32" Sony that's (at least) 20 years old.

that's r.f interference from the cable box, to prove it, unplug the cable box, then connect the t.v. directly to the cable line, the lines should be gone from both the t.v. and the monitor..

That's what everyone has been suggesting. If the box is putting out enough RF to affect her TV _and_ monitor (some possibly affecting the return path), I'm surprised her box & modem works to begin with.

But you have a good idea by connecting coax straight to TV. I live in Roslyn and have relatives in Brooklyn. I know that in Brooklyn, there's no way to view anything without a box. Here in Roslyn I can do what you're suggesting.

I wonder if possibly there's some sort of "unathorized, contact Cablevision" sign if she happens to be in Brooklyn or The Bronx when connecting without the mandatory box. Any screen image really (other than snow!) should confirm/deny whether it's the box.

I've seen some mean RF interference with a dying Sony box that affected my modem as the RF was leaking into the coax (I think that's called ingress.. )

Thanks for the suggestion.

[ replying to my own question ]

I just called a friend and had him try bypassing his box in Brooklyn. The remaining analog unscrambled channels are displayed.

She should try disconencting the cable modem and the wire from her tv then put on a dvd in a dvd player.

I am thinking there could be some kind of intereference or something.

if its at very top of screen from side to side with a hd box , ive seen this at houses and its something to do with the format of the channel and the tv. only certain brands ive seen this on .. if it were the electric you would have a buzz or hum or a hum bar scrolling up and down compplete picture .

The thing is she says it happens to her comp also. So we think it could be some kind of interference caused by a bad splitter or maybe a ground issue.
