| P2P Surprises
Security Folk,
How many times do you typically run across someone uploading using typical P2P file-sharing applications who is truly unaware that these applications upload when they are in use?
I keep hearing this in certain debates and I'm trying to figure out if its a red-herring claim (I know it exists with some anti-P2P groups as talking points).
You guys would know.

| Well...I work for an ISP
Happens more often than you think.. general scenario though is the "friend/kids/neighbour boy/nephew/etc." loaded it on there and simply showed the actual user/owner how to search and download, but fails to mention the sharing/upload aspect of it. The user/owner doesn't quite know what they are using, but since it works they don't investigate it further until they have a problem and call the ISP. |

I've run across many users that fit this profile that believe that they are downloading directly from Limewire.com. They have know idea what P2P is and they have no more inclination to learn about it than they do to find out what makes their toaster "tick".
It's all about getting the latest Jonas Bros. etc for free. No more. No less. |

1 edit | reply to funchords IMO, if they aren't somewhat PC savy, then they don't know about the upload aspect. (My feeling is that this describes most P2P users.) And even if they do know about the uploads, unless it affects them somehow, they really don't care. They are all about the "free" part of it (certainly not the legal part )... |
