To determine whether the router is the problem, you could connect two of your "wired" PCs together using a crossover cable. You could also use a switch and a couple regular ethernet cables. Then try pinging one PC from the other. You'd need to set up the ethernet card in each PC with static IP addressing...

What do you get when the computers "can't ping each other"? - "Unknown host", or dropped packets? What's the NetBT setting on each computer?
