aes128 : Speed through a low end home router with the firewall enabled (if it has one) will never be even close to 100M even if it has 100BaseT interfaces. Some older routers are hard pressed to do 10M because the CPU in the router simply cannot process the data fast enough and the CPU is maxed out.

My router, a ZyWall 2+ is rated to do 24M max with the firewall on. If I FTP through it to the DMZ zone from the LAN zone which means the firewall processes every packet, it maxes out. The CPU will be 100% and traffic is way slower than if the 2 boxes were in the same broadcast domain.

It does not surprise me at all that some routers may have trouble at the 15M level. If you have the option, try to disable the firewall part of the router and see if that helps. Doing statefull inspection of every packet on a home router takes some processing power.

I have several old routers from years back that are hard pressed to keep up with the old 4000 speed. If I turn off the firewall part and just use them to do NAT, they do fine.

At work we have firewalls that easily do GigE speeds but these cost thousands of dollars.

vslacks : Unfortunately, the firmware is the latest on Netgear's site (it's the WGT624 v2 model) and was last updated nearly three years ago. I also tried different cables, rebooting the router, turning off wireless, and unplugging all other devices plugged into the router. Couldn't get speeds above 8/1 through the router, but got 15/1 easily with a direct-to-modem connection. I'm going to pick up a new router today - hopefully that will fix the problem.

MaxCras : You got to remember that older consumer brand routers were not exactly designed with these higher speed connections in mind. Technically a router with 10/100 mbps lan connections should route 100mbps max over the wan port, but buggy or incomplete firmware could cause any number of speed related issues.

Check their site and see if there are any newer firmware files for the router and see if that helps

vslacks : Well, unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the issue. All my lights are green.

This is really strange. This router is about three years old - I'm tempted to get another, but wondering whether that will actually fix anything.

vslacks : I called WOW today about the new speeds and was told to reboot my modem to get the 15/1 speeds (I previously had 6/1). The good news is that when the modem is connected directly to my computer, the speed tests I've run show that I'm getting the advertised speeds. But when I'm connected through my Netgear wireless router, I'm getting speeds in the 7-8 Mbps range - not bad, but not close to what I get when the router is removed from the connection.

What's strange is that I've never had this problem before now - I've always gotten the full advertised speeds through the router. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
