| Apple is "making" people dumb
I watched a couple of Im a Mac commercials on Youtube and what really caught my attention is that they say that MACs just work and every person can use it. In one video they compare a Mac and a PC. The first thing that makes me go nuts is that "Macs are superior to PC". This statement makes me feel dumb. They are just generalizing because a PC with a Intel Extreme Processor, two NVIDIA GTX260 in SLI with 6gb is clearly better than a iMAC or even a MAC Pro. COnsidering the MAC OS X is a light OS compared to Vista.
Another thing is that "Just unpack your iMac, plug in the electric cord and turn on the computer and get working" This is seriously going to make people less aware of how PCs work. No wonder why most iMACs users have to send their computers to Apple just to fix a simple thing. Fixing a computer is considered "nerdy" but is incredible when you see kids that use a computer less than 2 hours a day, know what RAM or Processor mean. An average MAC person doesn't even know what those simple terms mean.

Second, do you know how your refrigerator works, your TV, your car? Could you fix any of them?
The computer has become an appliance. |

Just like cars, sometimes non technical people waste ridiculous amount of money for small easy repairs you can probably do. |

| reply to ja2007123 So your rant is that a Mac commercial says that Macs are superior to PCs?
Imagine that! The nerve of Apple - promoting their product!
And then you claim that something that is 'easy to use' is a bad thing because it makes you less aware of how the other thing works.
Interesting perspective. Stuff that works properly is bad!
Note that (a) I'm a PC user, (b) I'm not a Mac user, (c) I am making no comment on which is 'better'. But your grounds for complaint are, frankly, bizarre. |

| reply to ja2007123 the average consumer wants a PC that is as easy to use as a TV or Microwave. they want to plug it in and just turn it on. the people who the ads are aimed at are the people who need tech support to stop their VCR from flashing 12:00. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

| reply to ja2007123 Personally, I'm pissed off at the PCI bus. Now no-one bothers to understand all that deep stuff about having too few unsharable IRQs. Quite frankly, I don't know how you can use a computer without having to know whether your NIC or your graphics card is using IRQ 11. |

You mean they don't? quote: In one video they compare a Mac and a PC.
And with that kind of hardware, it would actually end up being more expensive than the Mac. And for what? quote: COnsidering the MAC OS X is a light OS compared to Vista.
You say that like it's a bad thing.
quote: Another thing is that "Just unpack your iMac, plug in the electric cord and turn on the computer and get working"
This is what people want. quote: This is seriously going to make people less aware of how PCs work. No wonder why most iMACs users have to send their computers to Apple just to fix a simple thing.
You mean they don't take their PCs to so-called "service centers" like Best Buy? quote: Fixing a computer is considered "nerdy" but is incredible when you see kids that use a computer less than 2 hours a day, know what RAM or Processor mean. Ditto.

| reply to ja2007123 Are you sure Apple is making people dumb because for a PC user this sure is a dumb rant. Next you'll be complaining about automatic transmissions making it too easy to drive a car.
I own both Macs and PCs and I find the Mac a joy to use. Both for its simplicity and its complexity, after all it is UNIX under the skin.
I also work in IT mostly supporting Windows networks, servers and desktops and I can easily say that PC users are dumb too. Most don't know how they work and couldn't care less. |

Is technology supposed to be hard for the average consumer, and is the UI supposed to be a pain to work with?
Like the one person said, the computer has become an appliance - almost even a necessity like the refrigerator or a car. Like you'd want a refrigerator to work as soon as it is delivered to your home and plugged in, or like when you sign your name for a car and drive it off the lot, I'd imagine that you would want your computer to start working as soon as everything is plugged in and you press the button to turn it on.
As far as people taking their computers to get serviced for arguably simple (to us) tasks, well, I simply don't expect everyone to be computer repairmen. There's nothing wrong with not feeling comfortable with upgrading the memory on a system all by yourself - that's what help is for, and that's why shopping around for the right help is necessary. |

| reply to ja2007123 Computers of today are commodities and no amount of ranting will stop that. They are like cars, very complicated, yet everyone wants to just get the keys and drive on. Who reads the manual.
There is this misnomer that the Kids of today, know everything about computers. I am talking about 10 - 30 years old.
That is hogwash. Most of them just want a machine to work. They care nothing of the guts.
My 17 year old can not even be bothered about learning how to reboot the DSL modem, when it goes down. He does not even care what goes on inside the computer box. It is my job. Just wants to surf and play Xbox, the Sony Consoles, etc.
So I gave him one my old AMD 2's running at 500mhz and 500 meg ram, with XP. Why waste money on this attitude and he doesn't even know the difference or how to look up specs.
BTW - my first machine was in 1985 or so - a Tandy 1000 and I roll my own @ 56 yrs. I have been trained on Macs for work and have a Mac, but I am a masochist and like being screwed by windows on occasion. --
Darn, its gettin that time to go to Wallymart to gits me picture taken agin.

I'm an Apple fan myself, but I angrily refuse to drink the Kool-Aid: all of my stuff is used, I support it myself, and Apple has never seen Dime One of my money.
Besides which, ever since they dropped the "Computer" from their name, I can't help but feel that they're trying to be too many things to too many people. Which makes the likelihood of them ever seeing my money even less likely.
I need a laptop/box that works. Whether that laptop or box has the outline of a fruit on it or a big-ass smiling picture of Bill Gates makes little difference. For me, it's all about value for money and not about being "cool."
Cool people tend to be broke people as well, a lesson that has not been lost on me. |

| reply to ja2007123 Majority that purchase Mac's, already know how computers work, and want something that sets them apart from the rest. Also, any movie or commercial, or TV show out there is edited on a Mac.
BTW, it is Mac, not MAC. A MAC is a definition for Media Access Control. |
