| New DSL Installation- Speed Does Not Match Advertised?
Hi there! We just had DSL installed because we've had too many problems with Comcast's cable internet. We ordered the Elite tier (6mbps/768kbps down/up), but on speed tests and when downloading from newsgroups, I am downloading at about 5mbps. With cable, we always got exactly what the plan was advertised at, so I'm not used to this. I haven't had DSL since 2001, so I don't really remember much about it. Is this normal for DSL, or should I bet getting the 6mbps that I ordered? I have already tweaked the MTU and RWIN.
If it helps, the Technician Readout from the modem lists the current down/up rate as 6016/768. It also lists a field called "Current ATTN DR", which to me looks like it could be the maximum line speed (just based on the numbers). These are 11584/1056 for Rx/Tx.
If it is normal for DSL to download at a rate far lower than the advertised speed? If so, would getting U-Verse give me any closer to the advertised speed? It's available in the area.
Thanks! |

Do a speed test and post the link to it. -- So Obama says McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time. Well Obama voted with Bush 50% so that cancels out 50% of 90. So 50 from 90 leaves 40%...you have to qualify every statement these people feed those who blindly believe it. Obama, not ready to lead. |

| reply to makavel Haha yes I guess "far lower" is very subjective. I felt that way because I had been used to getting exactly (or even slightly above) the advertised speed on cable, so getting 1mbps lower than the advertised speed was a bit upsetting, especially because I had made the decision to switch services based on the fact that they advertise the same downstream speeds, but AT&T is more reliable. After using the DSL for a few days, I'm ok with downloading about 125 KBps slower than cable (and I truly do notice this frequently on usenet) because it is more reliable, and the added bonus of free dialup and wifi access. Thanks for your input everyone! I'm glad to know that this is normal for DSL.
While it doesn't matter at this point, here's a speed test I took a few minutes ago: »www.speedtest.net/result/331622779.png |

| reply to makavel I think you're a tad low, assuming your ATM sync rate is confirmed by your modem to be 6016/768. Here's what I got, using the same testing site, and the same distance 50 mile
DSL uses a MTU of 1492, whereas cable uses 1500. Assuming your modem is in fact syncing at the top rate, I would look towards tweaking the parameters of your connection, in the router and at the pc. |
