| [northeast] New install coming up, already issues, help
Ok, I've only submitted my contact info about 100 times on verizon's website to contact me when fios is available in my area, and of course I'm not surprised when someone showed up yesterday walking the neighborhood trying to sign people up for it being the first time I've heard it was available here.
But he said something peculiar, he said my house and 1 other don't qualify for verizon TV but everyone else does in the area, wtf? It's fiber link, it can't be a technical problem.
The only thing I can think of is, since I have dryloop dsl with no verizon home phone service, this has totally thrown off their system. How do I get through this? I assume I'll need help from someone who actually works at verizon to get through this strange issue.
Also, they are supposed to call me again today or something, when I do the install, I want to use my own router, do I just request them to put in a NIM-100 module or will they tell me to go pound sand? I have ethernet run and a 24port gigabit hp layer3 switch, so I can move whatever data around.
Anyone have any info on the size of the equipment? I would like to know ahead of time so everything is ready, I have a little data closet in my house that I'd like the equipment, not sure how far they drag that fiber though, its not facing an outside wall of the house. | | Oregonian2

They did that here as well, presumably a standard thing to (going house to house) but at least here they gave no "bonuses" as they do online (albeit in my case that was only a free month -- but still better than nothing).
Unless you had Verizon "branded" DSL, I bet you got a LOT of postal junk mail from them -- they'd send me one every time I checked online (my DSL ISP was someone else, even thought the copper/CO was theirs).
NIMs and the like will depend upon whether you can get them to give you TV service. Are you on a border where the other houses are within a city limits and you're not (or vice versa)?
The only thing big is the ONT and associated power stuff (I don't know about set top boxes though). Router is bigger than all others I've seen but still not "big" on an absolute scale (and mine was a reduced size one, the 'D'). | | jeremiah

| It is indeed verizon branded DSL. I'm anticipating an equal amount of confusion on their part when I get this fios installed as there was when I had a dryloop dsl installed, anything out of the ordinary is just asking for it with Verizon, if its not in the onscreen prompts or computer readout, you're in trouble.
I don't live on a township line, im smack in the middle of my block. I'm also about 1mile from the CO driving according to my odometer, and a shorter distance if you just connect the dots on a map. As I understand it my neighbors on either sides of me and my neighbor behind me can all get verizon fios tv but I cannot.... as it stands.
I'm just concerned with space requirements on the wall, I already have a spot in my data closet that should fit it, complete with a dedicated 20amp circuit for network gear, that should be enough for their equipment. | | darcilicious Cyber Librarian Premium join:2001-01-02 Forest Grove, OR

This sounds like an data issue -- your address didn't make it into their qualifying database for some reason (I suspect the dry-loop account but I don't really know). You need to call Verizon and tell them that both your neighbors qualify but your don't and that you'd like that looked into. | | birdfeedr Premium join:2001-08-11 Warwick, RI

| reply to jeremiah It's also possible some of the confusion may be related to a billing quirk. As I understand it, unless you have a VZ land line, TV and internet service is charged or debited by plastic. It's only with a phone line that you actually get a bill that's tied to your phone number.
It may have improved in the last few months. I know they're trying to get it all straightened out.
As far as your install is concerned. Have cat5 wire already in place from where they will likely install the ONT to where the router will be. Ask the installer to provision data on the ethernet. Let him run the coax from the ONT as he wishes.
You don't have to terminate the cat5 ends, he will likely do that. Let him hook up the internet and TV, prove the system works, then he's done.
After he's gone, you can configure your network more to your liking. Check out the FAQs. »Verizon Online FiOS FAQ »Replacing the Actiontec (part 1): Coax to Ethernet
Part 1 starts with switching you over. If you get installed with ethernet originally, you can proceed with Part 2, 3 or 4 depending on what your network should look like. | | jerodbunch

| reply to jeremiah I'm also the original poster, but I found my username
So I had to call, the lady on the phone knew exactly what was wrong, and it was the dry loop, she had to do some special bypass. I'm all setup for tv/internet/phone in 2 weeks.
I have cat5e ran from where they may put the ONT to my tv, anywhere they put it pretty much I've got cables for it, I punched down some ICC jacks already, and I have a nice 24port patch panel in my data closet. I hope they can just run the fiber to my data closet and have everything in there, but if they can't I'm ready for that too, coax and ethernet both, so however it goes. I'm very picky about my data terminations, I used to run cabling for a previous employer. All I know is, a crimp looking like this would get replaced in 2 seconds »upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c···_box.jpg
I plan on installing a freebsd box w/ pf&altq which is what I use on my current dsl line. I also have a pix506e and 2 cisco 1841 routers for backup. | | jfoj

| reply to jeremiah If you can get the fiber into your closet, you may want one of the All In One indoor ONT with Battery & power supply in a wall mounted housing. It also has a coil area in the back of the ONT for additional fiber.
See this BBR link for some pictures:
»New FIOS NID
Do not have exact dimensions, however it is about 12-14" wide and about 22" tall as I recall. Cleanest indoor config I have seen.
Make sure you have a way to ground the ONT, preferably a cold water pipe, but some folks resort to the electrical ground of a wall outlet.
Also request Internet to be provisioned over CAT5 rather than coax (MOCA).
You can use the ActionTec as a MOCA bridge, however, see if you can get a NIM-100 from Verizon or check on e-bay for a NIM and ditch the ActionTec after the install.

| I have 3 outlets in my data closet, 1 is the original outlet on the wall which isn't properly grounded, and 2 are both separate 20amp circuits that are properly grounded ran with armored cable jacket. No water too close to my data closet really. I did request a NIM-100 on the phone and she put that in the notes for the install tech, maybe they'll have it, maybe not.
Thanks for the replies everyone. | | jerodbunch

| Well the fios is here, seems to be working ok. Got a pic of my little DC, they were able to run the fiber right into it for me.

My wiring isn't very tidy yet, and I haven't punched anything down to the patch panel yet, I just mounted it, I wanted them to put the fios equipment in first and work around it. I spent most of the weekend building my fbsd firewall and wondering why the hell I was having so many issues getting an IP, more on that in a bit.
Got a couple gripes, apparently they wont trench a line in my neighborhood, I guess you have to live in a rich neighborhood to get that :/ Also they don't even stock the inside only ONT so I had to get an outside one mounted inside.
And the jackass installer cut one of my coax lines coming out of the wall on the right that was just plugging into the back of a wall plate feed through so he could crimp and end on it and connect it to the splitter instead of just removing my existing cable and using his own 4 ft piece of coax, he only left like 3" sticking out and I asked him to crimp an end on it, but its still kind of retarded, maybe I can put a wall plate on the wall there and connect it to the back of that......
Also, being as its an outside ONT, I'm wondering if its OK that they didn't hook the ground line up, anyone know if the inside only ONT has a grounded 3prong outlet? The inside one only has a 2prong outlet afaik.
Now for the router issue, I went to hookup my cisco 1841 and apparently it has a hell of a time dealing properly with a little thing verizon seems to be doing here. It's sending me arp requests with a source IP of 0.0.0.0 , this is wrong and bad. Anyone know why they don't use a valid IP for this request?
Other than that, I have my fios router still hooked up to bridge my STB to the ethernet network to get the VOD and guide info, seems to be working fine, I disabled the wireless on it and turned off dhcp and just have the lan side hooked up. That thing is a little chatty too, lots of igmp floating around. I think I see the STB doing some of that too.
My fbsd box can handle those 0.0.0.0 sourced arps ok, but it does complain about it frequently in my logs, if I find a way to surpress that I'll post it. Running 7.1-PRERELEASSE tracking -stable with pf&altq just doing priority queuing for now, might switch it to HFSC. | |
