Wow, have these people never heard of making their own cables?

It looks like they have 5-8ft patch cables on everything!

Went to install some new computers in a new company branch, walked into their "IT room" (water heater storage) and found this...

I bet that US Robotics 56k modem stuck on that wall still works like a champ!

We still install those things on a couple of networks for dail backup. You can drop a truck on one and it'll still work!

Got some nice orchestrated mess from the IRL circuit last season. All the coax is 1.485Gpbs HD-SDI video, same thing on the fiber.

Audio patch. Does 2Mbps AES Audio equipment qualify as broadband gear?

I did some contract work for ESPN and Sports South years ago. This does not look all that uncommon. Most of these set ups were very temporary. Often setup for less than 24 hours. Some times for races you might see this setup for a few days.

What truck was that?

CanerisErik See Profile, yes, that's a production video truck. That's about on-par for most trucks to look like during a shoot. Generally they're setup for the 'out', connect things so that you can yank it as fast as possible.

Sorry forgot about this post, the truck is IMSP (Indy Motorsports Production) HD-1

Yeah it's the norm for any "On location" shoot. Very temporary and usually never very orderly looking. But surprisingly it all works well.

Here's another one for you. This is the NEP 'ESU' truck at the US Open in 2001.

Here's a question for you. If Murphy should decide to have fun and kick murphies law into effect on you. How to find the problem in that kind of mess..

As a tech from day one I was always told the more anal you are the better...

This is confusing to me...

Yeah it's a pain in the ass to debug. But when it comes to live rigs like this, you just don't have time to be anal. Get in, get setup, get the shot, and get the hell out, as fast as you can.

Live A/V setups are very different from Datacenter setups. Although technology is similar and same in some aspects, the "style" of it is much different, especially in live environments. Just gotta make it work and make due with what you have, in zero time.

Imagine you had an entire datacenter worth of systems. A blank building (Some cases a tent) and you needed to make it live in 12 hours. It ain't gonna be pretty, then knowing you're gonna rip it down after only 5 hours of work... and set up again somewhere else for the same thing.

Re: Dont touch these wires.

Ha! 12 hours. Some shoots the whole thing is 12 hours, that means unloading the truck, setup, debug, shoot, pack, leave.

It's actually easier than it looks. The trucks themselves are setup very precisely. Everything has a patchbay, and everything is very well labeled. The interconnects are where things get tricky.

You use a lot of Gaffers tape and White paper tape, but you get the job done. Most of the time you have faulty pairs and gear too, so you get to swap things out on the fly.

It was a lot of fun compared to IT, that's for sure.

Hehehe!

Reminds me of some good times!
It's like the IT boot camp. You get to do the same thing, in a muddy storm, or in the worst environments possible, and or course with zero time.

Don't forget with faulty equipment, ground loops, lots of stairs, heavy cameras, and incompetent production staff!

Plus the idea of walking in to the truck in the morning with a clean slate, having ~200 patch cords going, intercoms, various other hardware strewn all over the place, then making it like you were never there!
