This couldn't be more of a good sign towards the dieing days of dial up. I look forward to the day where the entire world is connected to HSI and the days of dial up will be forgotten.
On the side note, today is my birthday and marks the 7th year of me being stuck on dial up. |

| reply to casey131 well since I am kinda lazy and I have no better pictures myself..
-- I have had Direcway/Hughes for years. I've had trouble with them some until the latest system DW7000. It is blazing fast 1 to 1.5 kbps down most of the time- Kath159 |

| reply to casey131 Don't worry, I know exactly how you feel. I live in the middle of nowhere and tried Hughesnet but it failed. We've had dial-up since 1996/7. The speeds have gotten much better since then, but I still get an abysmal 26kbps.
Happy late birthday though. |

join:2008-08-03 San Antonio, TX | dial up should be banned due to its slow as hell. Some one needs to discover something that can make DSL much better and maybe go further like 1700 feet for me. |

Granted dial-up is slow, but it's better than nothing if it's the only option you have. |

Latest version of ADSL2 (G.992.3 Reach Extended) can go out to 22,000 ft but only at relatively low bit rate. In general makes better business sense for Telcos to deploy Remote Terminals, shortening customer loop, then to squeeze a few extra feet out of copper outside plant.

| reply to Rawr Sounds like us in Harrisville NH. We've had dialup from 1997 up to last spring. Never thought we would EVER see broadband untill last spring! No cable, DSL and we didn't dare take a chance with Satellite internet, after reading all the horror stories. Last spring we read an article in a local paper about a wireless internet company that just came to the area, so we called them up they came right over and did a signal test and set us up. His company now services at least 12 towns in the area and they keep expanding because demand is so high in this area. We've had 3 antenna upgrades b/c we lost our signal as the leaves came out but the last antenna we got works great, it's a parabolic dish antenna! And there is no cap on how much we can download, not that we download that much becuase we just came from dial-up . So keep hoping,it will happen! When it does happen my guess is it will be wireless and it will happen when you least expect it too.

| reply to casey131 Sometimes its not just the lack of availability of anything better than dialup but if there is no competition for dsl, cable or or satellite, the prices are very high and even given the choice, you stay with dialup at $10/mo instead of something faster at $40 unless you spend all day on the net or need if for something else. Modems had room for further improvements, even over POTS but companies simply gave up because it was not the smart business move and not the way of the future. For those of us with dialup we are simply stuck with the modem technology we now have. I've tested several modems, and posted it here somewhere years ago, keep lines short, use a graphics accelerator and a few other minor tweaks available on this site and after that, yeah, you can call it dead. Not much but talking about the stuff we have now and how its not going to improve. Could be worse, many have no internet at all. There's always something to be thankful for. |
