The RIAA's Playbook: No New Business Models Without RIAA Own

quote:
Basically, the record labels are using a protection racket system: give us some equity, or we'll shut you down.
I believe that is illegal. we should sue them.

If the mafia was doing this, it would be considered racketeering-and be prosecuted under the RICO statues.

But, since the RIAA is doing it, it's okay-after all they regularly BRIBE Congress and law enforcement.

the RIAA is more powerful then Al Capone was during the 1930s when he could buy feds with booze and cash.

Bah, it's just spin. The RIAA member companies own the rights to the music, they can put what restrictions on it they want.

maybe so but if they ignore certain business models like they did the Internet for so long, they are destine for total failure. them ignoring digital media for as long as they did is why they have so much trouble with online piracy.

But they're not ignoring new business models- they want to make sure they control the new business models like they do the old and can make enough money off of them to partially recover from declining CD sales- it's actually a very smart move on the RIAA's part.

the problem is they want too much control, in the CD and earlier era i could play that music on any device as long as it could play that said media type.

in the digital download era the perfect utopia for the RIAA is one in which you would have to purchase a copy for each device. it would be like your DVDs being registered to your living room player and the refusing to run in the Minivan when on a trip.
