| How far are you from the CO? Use the dslreports tool if you do not know how far. The further away from the CO or remote terminal, the slower your max speeds can be. I say can, as it isn't always the case.
Do you have dsl and phone service on the same line? If so, you need to have dsl filters on every jack that is being used. This would include phones, satellite dish receivers (for their phoneline uploading of ppv info), home alarm systems, fax machines, etc.
Next thing to check is how long a phone line you have plugged into the jack to the dsl modem. GWI likes customers use short lines 4ft long. They also like to make sure the lines aren't near any sources of electrical noise, such as anything with a motor, etc.
If those all check out okay, then it could be a prem wiring issue or an issue with the actual circuit. The latter is something GWI could check for you. If you subscribe to the wire maintenance service plan, then GWI can check your prem wiring for free.
Otherwise, to check your prem wiring yourself, follow the line from the phone jack where you have the dsl modem plugged to all the way back to the NID (should be a grey box on the side of your building or in the basement that says network interface device or bell atlantic, nynex, etc). Make sure there are no splices in the line, or cuts. If there are, you can replace the line with CAT5e or CAT3, both of which are available at Home Depot, hardware stores, etc. Run the line direct from the NID to the telephone jack. |

 | reply to buzz_4_20 Filters are set up correctly. If I move the modem closer to the distrib block in the basement would that make a large difference. |

 | First off what modem and model are you using? |

 | reply to buzz_4_20 I've discovered that the 2100 isn't capable of connecting faster than 8m down and 800k up. I'm gonna email gwi about this and see if I can get my whole 1meg upload. Every K up counts... |

| reply to buzz_4_20 I feel your Pain; I pay for a 15/1 and get 11/1. I am close enough to the co to piss on it, I have a home run to the modem ( of which I have a westell 6100, a bright point, a d-link that I use, and a toy one called a zhome or something like that sent to me by the gwi which works the poorest of the lot). The cable is 22 gauge pvc to the house with no tap, cut aheads, or coils. Yet I never have got even close to 15 so I do not believe you will see your full speed as they have never deliver it and give you the crap about wire, distance and anything they can, when they run out of that, they are big on saying UP TO x speed, so good luck but I doubt you will ever see you full speed. Before you asked I worked for Verizon for 28 years so I do know the pair and routing of my line and it was installed by a good friend in IR. Bruce |

Thanks Bruce |

Thanks Bruce I never said specs call for this. I said "gwi likes customers..". To clarify, I was talking about the telephone cord between the jack and the modem. |

1 edit | Hi yea I know what you meant,I asked gwi the same question,as a point of interest I have a home run of 5e and it terminates into an rj11 plug I have about a 50 foot line cord, looking at the home run, GWI could provide no info on that 4 foot crap it is just a lame duck, the spec allows 100 meters(300 or so feet). Thanks for the reply. Bruce

 | reply to buzz_4_20 As I have it understood, the g.dmt standard has a technical limit of 8megs down and 800k up. From everything I can tell this is my problem. I'd have to get another modem from the company and to get the rest of my upload speed. |
|
 | reply to buzz_4_20 As long as it's twisted pair, it doesn't much matter how long it is. However, those flat "phone cables" that come included with the self-install kit aren't. That's what you want to keep as short as possible, and that's what hawk82 is talking about. |

 | reply to buzz_4_20 If you can get your hands on an ADSL2+ modem, then GWI will switch you over to that codepath. You're likely to see better sync rates on ADSL2+. |

braynesPremium join:2005-03-14 Waterville, ME | reply to buzz_4_20 What speed are you suppose to be getting? they will send you a adsl+ one from zhome but it is not worth the shipping ( at least the one they sent me I sent it back to them) and it smells like burning plastic if you use it. Bruce |

 | reply to buzz_4_20 I've got 5 down and 1 up. My download is spot on but the upload falls short. |

braynesPremium join:2005-03-14 Waterville, ME | Thanks for the the test, up is better then mine and I am at 15/1, if everyone post a speed test you will notice a patten of everyone not getting there speed, and you never will. Bruce |

 | reply to buzz_4_20 Then why do they advertise 1meg upload? |
