| [hard drive] Laptop hard drive failure
Gateway laptop, less than 2 months old. WD 250 GB hard drive has failed. I pulled it and it won't power up using a usb/sata adapter. Gateway is shipping a replacement.
My question is this: The laptop will not boot up to a bootable disc with the hard drive in the machine, but will if I pull the drive. Why is this? -- LHF's Football Master 2006 |

| PC/Laptop will POST, then BOOT. ! I am not disputing the possibilitiy that Sweet Witch suggested (bad HD disable CD) but I find it hard to believe. IMO, I believe it is likely that MOBO detects the presence of a HD but cannot identify the HD, hence it got hung there, the POST process never get finished and therefore no BOOT process. -- I used to be indecisive, now I am not sure. |

| reply to markwp2001 What it does is the following:
With the bad hard drive installed, when you power up it goes to a screen with Gateway on it, and 2 options:
F2 Boot options F10 Bios
(I may have these backwards)
If you hit F2 or F10 it takes you to those screens, but only if you press them within the first few seconds. If you wait, the next screen comes up, which is blank except for a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner -- LHF's Football Master 2006 |

| reply to markwp2001 then the case is closed. further tinkering may void your warranty. I'd stress that they may have to replace the motherboard. unfortunately, gateway does not have onsite field techs like Dell, so you'll be out of the laptop till they can return it. |

I called Gateway last Saturday; new hard drive was shipped Monday and arrived Wednesday, yesterday. Installed and the laptop is now operational. Gateway support was easy to reach and work with on this issue.
Thanks for the help, Sweet Witch, ChiTang, and yuutomo. I appreciate it.
