UPLOAD Speed

I recently had Wildblue satellite installed and have not had a page load in less than 25 to 58 seconds. On numerous calls to them, much testing and having a service call I was told I have an upload speed of 243 kpbs. Funny thing was the service guy used speakeasy, which was accurately measuring download speed to the expected kbps, but upload speed was only 46 to 67 on numerous tests and he told whoever was on the other end of the phone I shouldn't be charged for this quality of service.

I can see why they like their toast testing system when it HAS to be inaccurate or my pages would load in the promised time, if the readings were what THEY THINK!!!

Try »www.testmy.net/speedtest/upload_···test.php

Either one of these from link above, larger the better.
Medium (1MB) - 1013 kB
Large (1.5MB) - 1496 kB
Larger (2.9MB) - 2992 kB

What package (value, select, pro) do you have?

What is your page load speed for CNN? Here are my results:

Time to load cnn.com: 34.6 s (566.1 kB down, 144.9 kB up)
Time for page to appear: 23 s
10 out of 139 page elements blocked:

I have the select package. The test you said to do says download is 331 and upload is 136, but tonight for the first time they seem to be loading a little speedier - about a 25 sec load

Please copy and paste the results of the speed test so we can see exactly what test you performed. Since you have the select pack, I suggesting you test with the 3072 kB file for download and the 1013 kB file for upload.

Here are my results:

Using Cheyenne proxy for Anik-F2:

KathiB, for clarity let's keep your problem in this thread rather than spreading it out among three threads.

Spice is there a different ping for different areas?? What is a gateway?? I'm new to very slow satellite internet.
Before dealing with ping, please copy and paste the results from Test My Network so we can make sure your slow speed is not caused by the test. Most speed test sites do not give accurate results because they are not designed to deal with the high latency (the time required for the signal to go up to the satellite and back down) of satellite Internet. Measuring and posting your page load time for CNN will give me a clue about whether your browser's setting need to be adjusted.

Yes, there is a different device to ping for each gateway, although the ping will still work if you ping a proxy in another gateway.

When a signal is sent from your satellite dish to the satellite, the satellite sends the signal down to the gateway assigned to your spot beam. A gateway is a building where the signal connects to the Internet land lines. Wildblue has 7 of them and they are identified by the city in which they are located. Wildblue uses two satellites, located in the same orbital slot, called Anik-F2 and Wildblue-1 (or WB-1). Because you are a new customer and are located near Howard City, MI, you are probably using WB-1, beam 115 and the Laredo gateway. If so, you are near the edge of the spot beam, but not in a beam overlap area, where service is sometimes bad. If you are using Anik-F2, then you are using spot beam 27, the Winnipeg gateway and would be near the middle of the spot beam where service is best. Here is a spot beam map for WB-1.

Spice - keep in mind I ran the test at 3A.M. when it runs a little faster than during peak hours. I will run again tomorrow during peak hours when it usually takes me up to 50 seconds or so just to load a page.

Your upload speed is typical for Wildblue. If your speeds slow down during prime time, about 5 pm to 10 pm on weekdays, there is not much you can do about prime time slowdown. It is caused by many customers using the Internet at the same time. Beam 115 is a popular spot beam.

If your speeds slow down at other times of the day, such as it is normal during the night but slow during the day, the problem could be an alignment problem correlated with temperature.

Your download speed is a bit slow. Since December 2007, using the proxy has made download speeds slow for some users. It is why I use the Cheyenne proxy rather than the one in my gateway, Riverside gateway. Ensure that you are not using the proxy in your gateway. In Firefox starting at the pull down window in the upper left side of the screen:

left click "Tools"

Left click "Options"

left click "Advanced"

left click the "Network" tab

left click "Settings..."

Selecting the radio button for "Direct connection to the Internet" makes you not use the proxy.

Selecting the radio button for "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" makes you use the proxy.

After disabling the use of the proxy, run a download speed test at Test My Network to see if you have any improvement. This suggesting does not affect upload speeds.

Please post speeds tests taken at different times of the day.
