Gateway P-7811FX Review

As other readers in these forums probably know, I bought the new Gateway P-7811FX notebook PC that's now on sale at Best Buy for $1249. Which at that price, it's a freakin' bargain for what you get as far as specs.

By the time I got done buying it I spent around 1.5 grand. I bought the 2 year Accidental Damage Service Plan, just in case I drop this thing.

Now, for the moment you've all been waiting for... the juicy specs!

Dimensions: 1.3"-1.70" (H) x 15.75" (W) x 11.75" (D) or 33-43mm (H) x 400mm (W) x 298mm (D)

Mouse and Keyboard: Full-Size Keyboard, Synaptics Touchpad with Vertical Scroll
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
Weight: 9.2 lbs

Some screen shots...

At first glance...
This notebook is not only fast, it's screamin' fast! The processor alone in this thing is fast. Multitasking is not going to be a problem with this notebook and with Windows Vista 64-bit it really leverages the power of this processor along with its heaping amount of RAM.

Boot up times are great, you hardly have to wait for it to boot. It's like you blink your eye and it's done.

I'm not going to lie, it's heavy. Clocking in at a heavyweight 9.2 lbs. you know that it's a clunker of a notebook.

The graphics card, well... sorry, I haven't had the chance to test this yet. I plan on picking up Hellgate London soon and play it on this notebook. But considering that the graphics card in this thing is no lightweight I'm sure that it'll play some beefy games with no issues.

The screen is great, the only problem is that I had to take the resolution down to 1440x900 from its native resolution of 1920x1200. Sorry, I'm nearsighted and it was giving me a headache having to squint a lot.

Anyways, that's the end of my review. If you have any questions please do post below, I'll be happy to answer them.

Looks impressive!

Welcome to the Non-wimpy Notebook Club!

Thin n light is nice if that's all you "need"... having a freakin monster has it's advantages.

Yep, in an ideal world, I would have both (and probably will in the future). If you travel with a notebook frequently, even a 6.2lb, 15.4" screen gets heavy to lug around...I love thin and lights for that stuff. However, there are times that a more substantial notebook, a "desktop-replacement" can really rock!

For people that can't read the standard font at 1900x1200, go into your personalization properties and look to the left side of the window for the option to adjust the font size. I like 125%, but you can go even higher. That way you don't have to squint to read text but can still take advantage of all that extra screen space.

I got this lappy from BB during memorial day sale, and at first it was acting up, like screen going off for 1-3 secs and coming back on, or sometimes never coming back so i had to do hard power off, but somehow problem is solved. I also heard that a lot of people having lock ups during games, or overheating, screen ghosting. Mine seems fine and since it is not acting up i love it. I have dual boot of Vista Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Alpha 6 x64.

Talking about specs, video card is great and has some overclocking possibilities. Mine never goes over 85C and thats considered pretty decent. These cards can handle up to 100c, but its not recommended.
Ram, hdd r pretty fast. This lappy has second hdd bay so another hdd can be added and put in raid (it still not possible because bios not supporting raid at the moment but it will be soon).
As for using maximum resolution, scaling doesnt really solve things at least for me. Size of icons of desktop is fine with 120 dpi (125%) but i dont like the spacing between them. Also webpages font is small. I use 1280x1024.

I just picked up this same machine at best buy the other day for 1100 bucks plus a free notebook bag and cooler pad. Its a really great machine and I am really loving it.
Just had one quick question maybe someone could answer. What is the 10 gig EISA configuration partition for?

I am not 100%, trparky could tell you for sure, but I would imagine that this is the "recovery partition" where the factory image of what comes on your hard drive is stored.

If you have not yet created recovery disks for your notebook, the sooner, the better!

It came with a recovery cd but it might have an image on the drive too, wont worry about it till space gets tight on the drive.
